Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "2002 trd blown transmission", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I figured I would attempt to run this across the wealth of knowledge on this board and hopefully get some feedback. I have a 2002 tundra v8 sr5 4x4 with 100,000 miles. As you can tell from the heavy mileage I spend alot of time in this truck and therefore I have been extremely anal about maintenance. Anyways, yesterday with no previous signs of trouble, my truck stalls at a stoplight. It will turnover and start however when engaged in drive all the warning signals light up and the truck stalls. With no other choice, I have it towed to the nearest toyota dealer. Forward to the next day, the dealer tells me that they pull a code from the truck's computer that they didn't know how to interpret. They claim that they then consulted with a engineer located in toyota of california who is involved in designing this transmission and he informed them that a bearing in the overdrive disintegrated and know my tranny is shrapnel. This is very disappointing to me, this truck was a signifigant investment for me and I was expecting every bit of 200k before even contemplating crossing this bridge. What even further rubs me the wrong way, is that the dealer could offer no logic why this bearing disintegrated and having done every bit of recommended maintenance what other measures could have been taken to prevent this. The dealer is simply wording this that it was bad luck and now it will take $4000 for a remaned tranny and torque converter to get the truck roadworthy. Any feedback and advice on where to
go from here would be much appreciated. Thanks.

All I can say is that blows! Sorry. You might try and get a quote from a good transmission shop, but I would be carefull to make sure they are well qualified to do this truck.
My transmission grenaded a couple of weeks ago ('02 V8, 2WD, 55k miles). I didn't find out exactly what part went out...Prior to it's failure the tranny performed perfectly - no warning before it quit on me.
So now, being a "belt and suspenders" kind of guy, I have added a Filtermag TM360 (" The FilterMAG™ Transmission Magnet (TM360) is designed to magnetically attract and hold the millions of steel particles that are circulating in your transmission oil. These are particles that are too small to be stopped by the internal filter. Snap the high powered transmission magnet onto the bottom of your steel transmission pan. It will immediately begin cleaning your transmission oil without restricting oil flow. So Simple!, So Effective !!!") as well as a Racor filter. I haven't installed the Racor filter yet.
