Dealer Finally Agreed to Pull Exhaust Manifold Part 2
Well folks, just got back from the dealership and had my right side exhaust manifold replaced under warranty. Guess what? no more ticking/diesling /knocking. What one dealer told me for a year was normal was quickly diagnosed and fixed properly by Rouen Toyota in Maumee,Ohio. They replaced every part of the manifold from the gasket to all hardware since we had agreed before that the bolts and nuts had been over torqued. The service manager even put on my bill of service " customer complains of exhaust noise on cold start. Found crack in right exhaust manifold. "
Anyone interested in a scan of this I will have it available in this thread in a day or two. Maybe showing it to your service rep. will help in getting your problem fixed. I can't believe I dealt with this for over a year when I knew it was an exhaust manifold leak from the start.
That's it, I'm taking mine in next week. I went to a local muffler shop yesterday and asked them to take a listen and the guy said the ticking was coming from the front left side, front most cylinder on the driver's side.
I had it in at Toyota about two months ago and they said they didn't hear any ticking noise. I'm closing on 34,000 miles so I want to get it done before 36k.
Well, took my truck in to the dealer today to have it checked for cracked exhaust manifolds. After reading all the posts, I had all the symptoms.
Dealer confirmed right manifold is cracked. They are going to replace right side, test truck and replace left side only if necessary. They have to order the part, so it should be fixed tomorrow (knock on wood).
I'm surprised at how fast they diagnosed the problem. I figured I would have to get rude or take it to another dealer based on some of the problems others have had, but the service mgr called me up and said, where do you think it's coming from? I said the right side up front...his mechanic agreed.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed everything goes smoothly though! Thanks for all the help, especially TUNDRABILL-21 whose post below this really got me motivated to check it out!
I'll post results when it's fixed...
Thanks all,
Andy

I pulled both of my manifolds to replace them with headers. I found that the left side was also cracked, but was not leaking badly yet. hopefully you have less problems than me. Call toyota and issue a complaint so that we can possibly get a recall. If the problem happened once, it will probably happen again, and again. You too tundrabill, call toyota.
I hear you on that Marco. Headers will come soon for me. Haven't done research on which ones I want. They'll have to wait because I just spent all my money on TRD Duels from Steve G
Talk to the tech at my dealership today and told him what I have been reading on this site about the cracked manifolds and sure enough He stated that he is doing is first manifold replacement next week for another customer. he asked for me to sit tight and wait because he want to see how it goes and then he will look at mine and see if mine also has a cracked manifold, Which I'm almost positive I have based on the ticking sound at start up and then goes away after warm up. He also stated that Toyota told him that if one side is cracked to go ahead and do both sides. From what He says the manifolds are being over torqued at the factory. We all need to press the issue with Toyota on this one.
i went ahead and got the jba headers. I installed them tonight. they sound better (no ticking) now maybe theywill last. Yeah, both of my manifolds were cracked at the same spot and they were a pain to remove (overtorqued maybe). Now I have headers, so whatever. Maybe if there is a recall, toyota will pay for my replacements and the labor. The person I talked to at the regional offices who filed my complaint said that if toyota issued a service bulliten or a recall, they would pay for the repairs I had to do. hopefully everybody with this problem talks to toyota, its all we can hope for. the whole deal really ticks (pardon the pun) me off.
I just took mine in, it's been ticking since 20k, now it has 45k, I took it in at 20K, 28k, and again now complaining about this ticking, this is the first time they could reproduce it, and were willing to pull the shields off and look at it, sure enough, the right exhaust manifold's cracked, I just called them to check the left to be sure it's not cracked as well. They've got a call into Toyota because this is only covered under the 3/36k warranty..... I'll be pulling my paperwork...
The dealer, literally next door to where I work, (Heritage Toyota in S. Burlington, VT - 5 yrs ago they had to change their name because they had such a bad reputation I think) said I'd have to pay for the work if it wasn't cracked when I brought it in for 30k..... I got a call from their customer satisfaction surveyer the other night, and I let them know what I thought of their service.
The place that's fixing it is 20 min's from home, and 40 from work, but they're customer service is better. (Handy Toyota, St. Albans, VT)
They're ordering the parts, and they'll replace it(them) on Monday.
Are there symptoms that folks can watch, listen for that may indicate cracks in the manifolds? Are there diagnostic steps to identify the problem?

This may be only useful for the California Tundra owners, but I though I'd post it anyway. I was reading my Owner's Warranty Inormation booklet and found this:
On page 17 (California Emssions Control Warranty), item 2 of the Manufacturere's Warranty Coverage section states:
"For seven years or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first:
-If an emissions-related part listed on pages 19-20 is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by Toyota. This is your LONG-TERM Emissions Control System DEFECT WARRANTY."
Page 20 in the Catalyst System section it states:
"-Exhaust manifold on Avalon, Camry, Camry Solara, Land Cruiser, MR2 Spyder, Sienna and Tundra equipped with 2UZ-FE.
-Exhaust manifold gasket on Land Cruiser and Tundra equipped with 2UZ-FE."
Now, here is what I am not sure of. In the specifications section of the Owners Manual, there is an engine (can't remember what the model number was) that was paired up with either a manual or automatic transmission. The other one (2UZ-FE) only has an automatic paired up with it. I am assuming (from the handbook) that we (V8 owners) have the 2UZ-FE engine. What I don't understand is, why would the cars with V6's be mentioned on page 20? Can anyone clear this up for me?\

How does that work?? Is Toyota trying to get over on the people with the cars listed in my post? Why would they say cars with the 2UZ-FE motors would be covered, when those cars don't come with V8's. Am I missing something?? Thanks Glenn!!
