Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Mobil 1 5W-30 or Truck & SUV 5W-40?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm about to hit 10,000 miles, and was wondering if I should use Mobil 1 5W-30 or Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-40. I have 5W-30 of standard oil in there right now.

Maximum,
That is a precision engine, not a small block 350, use 5w-30. Flow is the most important characteristic of oil, and multi-weight 40 won't flow as well as 30. I use Royal Purple. Use whatever you like, but don't void your warantee using some gimik oil "made for trucks" or whatever they claim. It is more marketing than science. That goes for you AMS oil guys as well. RP is far superior, in tests, and my humble opinion as well.
Mobil 1 synthetic is good oil. I use it in my Tundra and other cars. 5W-30 is the recommended viscosity by Toyota for fair weather operation. Use the viscosity that is recommended by Toyota in your manual for your driving conditions and temperature. If you use a heavier oil than recommended, you will likely give up 1-2 mpg.
As long as the oil you use meets the API SM spec, you are ok. The Toyota brand oil is private label packaged by a major oil company.
Their filters should meet the OEM minimum specs. Since you are still under warranty, you may wish to use the Toyota filters. They are very good quality and there will be no argument about your filter choice if you eventually have a warranty issue. The cost of the filters at the dealer are very reasonable too.
I have no connection with either Toyota or ExxonMobil, other than I use their products.
Mobil 1 5W-30 and 5W-40 are very different oils. The 5W-30 is a purely gasoline engine oil. The 5W-40 is a very robust dual-rated diesel and gasoline engine oil. I'd pick the 5W-40 for you if you drive hard & hot in the summer. I'd use 5W-30 in your winter. I've used 15W-40 in my Tundra for hot summer towing, and it worked very well. Our same 2UZ-FE engine is listed taking 20W-50 on Valvoline's Australian web site, so the additional viscosity is no problem.
There are no OEM approved or specified oil filters except the ones with the OEM's name on them. Generally, the engine makers do not publish filter specs. The aftermarket filter companies reverse engineer the OEM filter and list which of theirs comes close enough for them to warranty it. If you use a filter that is not listed for your engine, the filter fails and causes engine damage, the filter maker is not liable.
The analyses I've seen of Royal Purple motor oil show it shearing down to a lower viscosity sooner than other synthetic oils. I'd prefer Mobil 1, Schaeffer, Castrol. I do like the results I've seen of RP ATF and gear oil.
Mobil 1 filters are made by Champion Labs. I feel you can get equally good filtration with a Purolator Pure One filter for less money.
