This is a discussion thread titled "2005 VVTi V8 Premium or regular?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Searched and could not find an answer. Does the new VVTi V8 run on regular or does it require premium? What mileage can I expect from a double cab 4x4 with 50/50 driving?

The book calls for regular gas. As far as fuel mileage, I'm not happy at all so far, less then my 2000 Tundra and less then my 2004 dodge diesel. So far the best I have gotten is 14.5 and the worst is 10.5. But I only have 600 mile on it too.

I was looking at the CTD, what are you getting on it? Is it a 4x4?
I have ~ 1100 miles on my dble cab, 2 wd. Last week I went on a business trip and I got 16.75mpg on the first fill up and 16.59mpg on the second fill up. I would say 70% of that was highway.

My truck is a SR5 DC 4X4.I sold the Dodge 4X4 to get back to the Tundra, the best I got was 17mpg, but it only had 3000 mile on it. The tundra ride like a car, the Dodge rode like a truck and had a big blind spot on the right side. I wish i could have kept them both.

Mid grade Mobil gives me the best mpg. I have 20,000 miles on my 05 double cab 4x4. I get mid 18,s to mid 19,s mixed driving city, country, highway.I also use amsoil motor oil.
I think for 05 tundra the manual requires at least a 87. But it recommends premium for better performance, whatever that means.
For me, I think I am getting around 16mpg for 60/40 driving - highway 60. This is based on all the tanks of gas I have filled up with which is about 4 now. Basically, I get about 350 miles before I get the fuel light. I calculate using the miles travelled and then divide it based on how much I need to pump in before the pump automatically shuts off. I have been using 92 and 91. I will now try 89 to see if there is any difference in mpg. I doubt there will be tho'. In any case, I do not expect too much from the tundra in terms of MPG. I mean, this is a 4.7 V8 with 282 hp....what do you expect?

My owners manual reports that it will do fine on regular, (87) but will get better mileage on 91+ octane rating. This is true for my wife's '05 4runner as well. Unfortunately, fuel stations here in Alaska seem to top out at 90 Octane but I have been getting 18 mpg+/- so far, (500 miles).
Have had my 05 for 3 months now. Been using 91 the whole time. Usually get 16.5 mpg but it will range from 15.5 to 17.7
gonna use 91 for another 3 months then switch to the 80's and see if mpg changes.
Don't think you will see a change. My average is now 16.5 on reg unlead. Since new, average on all miles driven (3000 to date) is 15.5. Milage has been increasing .2 on each new tank since 2000 miles.

I am up to 5k miles on my '05 Tundra DC 4x4 and have tracked my mileage since it was new. I am averaging 15.75 mpg with about a 60/40 hwy/city ratio. I have tried switching octane levels but that didn't seem to make a significant difference (I usaully run on 89). I have Mobil 1 synthetic in the engine and drive a little on the aggressive side. I have a bed cover, which is supposed to help some. I also installed a MagFlow muffler and catback dual exhaust but that really has no effect on mileage. In fact, I think my mileage probably went down some with the muffler because it makes the truck sound like its faster than it really is, which makes me go a little heavier on the gas pedal
I've got an 05 DC 4x4 and am getting about 15.5 around town with about 60/40 on regular. I recently took about an 800 mile trip that went from 2000' to 7000' and back and got about 18.5 (almost all highway) on premium.

It'll be better than a Titan!

Have about 6,000 miles on our '05 DC 4x2. We consistently get just above 16 mpg with probably 50/50 city vs. highway mileage. Currently using only regular gas.
