Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "4.56 swap question", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
im sure it would be difficult for myself to swap gears in a diff because i do not know how to set backlash and all that other good stuff. so...where is a good place to take a 3rd member (out of the truck) to get re-geared? i'd also probably have that same shop install a no-slip. what would this cost w/ and w/o the no slip install? labor only of course. thanks in advance guys

if you can remove and reinstall the 3rd member yourself, you can order a regeared 3rd from various shops and send them your old 3rd member. they'll refund you the core charge, so all you pay for is the gears and labor to set them up. same as if you took it to a shop, but you can do it all yourself and dont need to worry about backlash.
If you have the same shop install the no-slip at the same time, they may not charge additional to install the no-slip.
Along with what Sean said, if you can remove the rear housing yourself, bring it in with the new gears, no slip and install kit, it should save you some money. Expect about $150-$200 for the install. PM member TRDZNTZ to hookk you up with a good deal on the complete package. Depending on how many miles you have on your truck, you'll want to consider a master install kit. $300-$400 for the no-slip, $175 for the gears, $150 for the master install kit and about $200 for the install.
im working on getting one out of an 04 tundra and im not sure how many mile it had when removed...so i better get the instal kit. would you recomend new gears or if i could find used ones for a deal, is that ok?
also, anyone know where i can get a no-slip for a good price? summit has them for 399.

You don't necessariy need the master install kit if you choose to buy the individual parts from Toyota-
FYI - Install kits don't necessarily include everything for regearing- (ie They do not have the carrier shims)
As for Gears- Go with Precision Gears if possible , stay away from Genuine Gear
