Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "What's the best OBD II Reader?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
There seems to be so many out there. What do you guys use and what's the best with the most features?
I was at Canadian Tire here and they have one that sells for $250 CDN, and it doesn't even plug to a laptop, so not as many features as AutoTap, etc...
I got mine here - http://obddiagnostics.com/index.html - might not have all the bells and whistles as many of them, but the reason i bought it was becuase i have a laptop to use it on.
I have an Autoxray 6000. I has been a tremendous help in getting the exact information from my Tundra's computers. I can also download the info to my computer and get reports with graphical readouts. No more guessing games on why my check engine light came on.
I got the 6000 because I need to check more than the Tundra but you don't need that, if you want to just check your Tundra, you just need the OBDII so you can get the 2000.

Do you need to have a check engine light come on to get reading or use it?

I use ScanTool. Laptop required. Nice software. Has readouts of several engine parameters. Below is a post on CL I posted some screenshots on while checking my s/c install on my car.

I have the Auto XRay 4000. I have used it a couple of times and it works great. It is easy to use, intuitive, and very basic. There is a great comparison chart on the different Auto XRay models here: http://www.autoxray.com/productcomp.htm
The 4000 comes with Generic OBD II software that allows you to see live data (about 17 or so paramters) and read/clear codes. For $50 you can add the Toyota "enhanced" datalist which allows you to see 20-40 more parameters in the datalist. They can "unlock" this feature over the phone if you call their CS line with a credit card. If you are using the scantool primarily on Toyotas and occasionally on other vehicles, this is a good option. If you need to see the data on a PC, you can buy a kit for $80 to do that. I would not spend the extra money for the 6000 unless you are planning on working on Ford, GM or Chrysler vehicles as much or more than Toyota.
I would stay away from Digimoto. I am not sure about the product itself, but their selling procedures are a little shady. I bought there "ELM" scantool on ebay and after a month and no product emailed to find out what was up. They emailed back saying ot would be another 2 weeks, three weeks "tops" to get the product out because they were busy during the holiday season (this was in February so they must have had a rush on Valnetines Day orders) and were out of stock (something they could have told me when I purchased the tool). After thee weeks still no word so I cancelled my order.
I also don't like the idea of having to lug a laptop around to look at data or read a code (hard to do while you are driving).
I worked for a company that made a higher end scantool for about 7 years and got a LOT of hands on experience with the tools. In general I do think the Auto XRay is a pretty good product for the price. Hope this helps.
I got the AutoEnginuity too. Works on most cars after 1995. Don't have the CAN or the enhance software for Toyota. But it can be upgraded. The engine dyno is pretty cool, but you need two people(passenger to work the software). Software is kinda slow on getting the connected.
