Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Fast Idle", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I've got an 05 Access cab with the 4.7 L engine. I've noticed when starting it first thing in the morning that it idles at about 1600 rpm. This is with the ambient temp. being around 40 degrees. If I start driving within a minute, idle speed will push me down the road pretty well without assistance from the accelerator.
Anyone else experiencing this? Can it be changed? It IS hard on the tranny and the brakes! My dealer says it's normal and can't be adjusted.

Idle speed an timing are not adjustable and are controlled by thr ECU as needed.

Mine does the same thing, its normal, probably programmed for emmisions.
I just checked my dad's 05 Tundra, and it does the same thing.

I'm glad I did a search before starting a new topic. My 05 4.7L AC has recently begun idling at 1500rpm when cold (around 50 deg). There was a guy on the radio call in car show this morning (maybe one of us?) who said his idles at 1750 and only gets down to 750 (mine goes to 500). I guess I can't complain now but it annoys me too. The radio guy suggested he bitch to
Toyota every chance he gets in case it may goad them to change the program.
Mine does the same thing. It's a bit disconcerting when I shift to Drive or Reverse when it's cold, because the engine revs even a bit higher before the tranny goes into gear. Also, when cold, the tranny sometimes stays in first gear a bit too long. I've learned to live with it because it seems that all the 05s do it. By the way, my 2000 Tundra did not act the same way.
My 2003 idles high when the engine is not yet warm (temp needle a about 1/4 up the guage). Before it is warm, the transmission shifts at much lower rpm. If I am accelerating normally, it will shift at about 1400 whereas it usually shifts at about 2000. It also will not shift into third gear until the engine is warm.
