Default AV magnets & Amsoil Bypass filters & Bosch +4s

I installed both the AV magnet and the Amsoil bypass filter system last summer. Yesterday I took an oil sample and will send it out for analysis today. I will report back on the resuts. This will be with the standard factory air filter. I should also note that I live about 3/4 of a mile down a dirt road. I am waiting to possibly change to the Amsoil air filter after the results from (Nhparrot??) on that filter. Total miles on the truck is approx 15,000 with 8,000 on the oil (Amsoil 5w-30).

I also changed my plugs from the factory standards to the Bosch +4s. Can't tell any seat of the pants change in acceleration, but the engine does seem to be a bit smoother on start up. The factory plugs did not look to bad, a chocolate brown color with no carbon fouling.

The AV magnet did have a little bit of very fine metal particles, almost like a sludge. but this was just enough to make a smear on a paper towel.

The oil does look black in a pan, but smears on a paper towel still look amber.

Interesting results. Be sure to post your oil sample results. Before you put the by pass filter in, did you flush the engine? Were you already using synthetic?

I'm really surprised that you had that much material on the plug, although George S. was thinking that the plug would still pick up material. He was right. I put my magnets on the oil filter. It will be interesting to see if you next change has as much metal on the plug.

I've had my Bosch's for about a two weeks. I still don't notice an MPG change though it does seem peppier (probably due to new plugs in general vs. 4 electrodes). Being in CA though and using the lousy gas, I only get 14-15 mixed use. Bumping up to 17 on the highway. Sometimes a little more, but then again, I drive 85 and 90 on the highway much of the time.

That was what I got this last change also (14.6 mpg), but I had a bottle of Techron in the tank. We'll see what this re-fill brings.

What did you have for a gap when you pulled the old plugs .031? Mine was normal buildup too.

Personally, I'd keep the factory air filter. It does a GREAT job of filtering. I really don't think you're going to improve on it with an oiled filter.

But you can be a guniea pig and test your results. You already have the "before".

Default No flush

I initially changed the oil and filter in this truck at 300 miles. Used Dino oil untill approx 1500 miles, and then switched to Mobil 1 until approx 7000 miles when I did the magnet/bypass change, and put in Amsoil.

When I took the oil sample and pulled the magnetic plug I did not change the oil. I just drained it into a clean pan and then poured it back into the engine. The results of the analysis will determine any filter changes. I figure with only 8000 miles on the oil and the filter, I might be able to go at least to 10000 miles before changing the filter.

The oil sample went out in the mail at noon today 5-28-02.

This sounds like a lot of hassle... After doing it this way, wouldn't you say it makes sense to get the petcock sampling valve for $10?

I think the sampling petcock would fit, but how would I then check on the amount of metal particles on the AV magnet. In reality I don't think I would bother checking the magnet again. It had so little buildup as to be of little interest, so I problably should put in a petcock for analysis purposes.

I'd say leave the magnetic plug alone until it's time to actually change the oil. Life is easier that way... :-)
