Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "TACOMA: transmission LEAK!!! 2005 DC 6-speed w/1200 miles", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
So I’m working in the back yard loading up the Taco with some junk we are throwing away. I drive back around the house to my normal parking spot and see some fluid in the driveway where I park. Looked like oil but I couldn’t find the leak. So I take a drive tonight to dump the junk and get gas and come back in and park it in the garage.
About an hour later I have a puddle bigger than my fist under the center of the truck about where the seats are. I grab a flash light and climb under to find the frame crossbar under the seats covered in what I believe to be transmission fluid. It looks like it’s leaking from the seal just above the bar. I tried to take pics but couldn’t get a good shot without a lift. So I guess I’ll be calling the dealer in the morning….DAMN IT!!!!
Anyone else have this problem on a 05 Taco, DC, 6 speed w/ 1200 miles?????
Ouch, sorry to hear. Hopefully the dealer will quickly take care of that for you. I've got same truck as you 5K, no leaks or probelms. Let us know the outcome.
Service manager just called me back with the story. The filler cap on TOP of the transmission was cross threaded from the factory and the threads are F.U.B.A.R on the tranny. They are waiting on instructions from Toyota on how to proceed at this time. They had to drop the tranny to even get to the plug.
So you have to drop the tranny on these Tocos to fill the tranny fluid??? WTF!!!
No tranny dipstick either??? WTF!!!!
I've personally never seen a car with a manual trans and a dip-stick (for the trans). Usually only autos have a dip-stick. Of course the new Taco autos don't have one either...?? ha ha..

could be a factory fill plug on top. I have the 5 speed auto & the fill plug is on the side.
I just know what he told me on the phone, he said top. There is a bolt on the side I could see where it's leaking but there is also a path of oil from top down to that bolt.
I knew when I bought the truck that this was the first year of the redesign so I was prepared for a few bugs. But this is just stupidity, cross threading the tranny fill cap and torque’n it down and trashing it. I guess maybe mine was built on a Monday???
This is real bad timing too, I need to pick my mother up from the airport on Thursday, and it's my twins 2nd B-day this weekend. I NEED a truck to pickup a few of the larger out door toys.
I'll be on the phone when they open trying to find out what Toyota told them to do to fix it. He didn't think he could tap it, he said the techs thought the aluminum wouldn't take it well.... F*** ME!!!! I guess I expected a little more out of a $28k dollar truck.
Shouldn't they be giving you something to drive? And if they are and it's just not a truck I'd say something to the Service manager about your need for a truck. I can't imagine them not taking care of you considering why your truck is there!

I just called them for an update, and they are still waiting on instructions for Toyota (who is on west coast time). He said if it can't be ready today he will hook me up with somthing to drive no problem.
Ok, now I'm starting to get mad. I called to find out what's going on and am told that they are removing the tranny to fix the problem. I ask how it would be fixed and get told he doesn't know. I ask how long it will take and he doesn't know.
So on to what I'm going to be driving... He tells me that they have a Corolla for me free of charge. Uuummm I'm sorry, I'm a pretty big guy and know for a fact I won't be comfortable driving a corolla because my in-laws own one and it's to dman small.
He tells me that he spoke to the owner and that's all they can give me as that's all they have for rental cars. Now this is a pretty large dealer with a ton of used cars, slap a plate on one and give it to me. I'm not taking a Corolla for an unknown amount of time.
Don't settle. Ask for the truck loaner. That is what you paid for and need. Nothing more, nothing less. It really irks me when the dealers pull this. They can do exactly what you described & put a dealer plate on one of the used trucks. Been there, done that with Toyota. Good luck with the warranty repair & keep us posted.
Before I even bought my truck they didnt want me racking up more miles on my trade in so they gave me a brand new Camry to drive. Much nicer and roomier than a corolla, but wont help you haul stuff. Point is they had no quams about giving me a new 05 to drive while they searched for the truck I wanted.

Well I showed up after work and refused to take the Corolla. After aobut 45mins of arguing with the service manager I asked for someone who could make a differance in my life. I got to have a sit down with the dealerships owner. He made a few calls and "found" me a Ford Taurus form the "other building"
You see they sell Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Dodge, and a few other brands that escape me right now. But they treat each section like a different entity. So the owner called the "Ford Building" and got me the Taurus. It's not a truck, but it's not a clown car either.
They say they couldn't slap a plate on one of their non rental cars supposedly because of New York’s plausible liability clause law. I've heard of it before when it went into effect but only thought it affected lease vehicles. I don't know the in's and out's of the law but it basically says that the leases holder can be held responsible for any damage done with the car. Guess it applies to other "loaner type" cars too???
Personally I think it's B.S.... Toyota reimburses them $30 a day for me to take the rental so it's just $$$ in their pocket for me to drive it. So I have something to drive that's comfortable anyway.

As for my Taco... they are going to TRY to tap it tomorrow (per Toyota) if that fails they will order a new transmission housing and that will take at least a week to get.....sigh

There should be no problem getting a new transmission. There probably trying to keep there warranty cost down. I work at a dealer in socal and we would not even hesitate to install a new trans with that problem.
That is unbelievable!
