Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Slight vibration, 2005 Tundra", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am driving 2005 Tundra SR5 DC RWD. This is not a major problem, just an annoying one. At all times, idling while parked and while moving, there is a vibration in the cab. It is most noticeable in the steering wheel and floor. It is more pronounced when the a/c is on. Is this normal as the toyota technician told me, or is it a problem with a solution. I prefer the latter. I love the truck just can't stand the vibration. I have riden in an access cab V-6 which had no vibration. Please help. Thanks
I went to the dealership again today and drove a salesman's tundra fairly identical to mine. It also had some vibration although it seemed to a lesser degree than mine. I am going to get an undercoating sprayed on the underside of the truck in hopes it will help. My fear is the engine vibration will still be there. It should help absorb some road noise if nothing else. Is your a/c operation noticeable?
I would appreciate feedback from other owners of 2004 - 2005 Tundra Double Cab. This vibration problem is really starting to bother me like a nagging toothache. If I get enough info which refutes the toyota dealerships "this is normal" response, I will use it to try and produce some action on their part.
My 2005 DC Tundra was built on 11/24/04 and I now have 3800 miles on it. I have no issues whatsoever. When at idle with the a/c on, it is very smooth. I am very happy with this truck.
If I were you, I'd take it to the dealer and raise heck until they did something about it. Start at the service writer, then go to the service manger and then, if necessary, to the general manager. If you have the toyoguard plus on your vehicle, they should give you a free loaner vehicle too.

thanks Gaspathanal and DCThundraGA. The more replies like this, the more leverage and ammunition I have on my side when I go back to the dealership. Thanks again.
hey, I just bought an '05 DC (1800 miles on it) and have the exact same vibration issue....mine only happens when at idle at a stop....I can feel the vibration come through the steering wheel and gas petal/floorboard and also I can slightly hear it at times-but the sound is very subtle. It almost feels like the truck is tuned too high, or running rough, but the RPM's at idle are normal at 600.....
I took it to the dealer and they gave me the same run-around, that its a truck and its normal!!! BS!!!!! I've had 3 other toyota trucks, including and '03 Tundra Access Cab, and ALL of them were smooth as silk at idle at a stop. The dealer just doesn't want to waste their time and energy looking for a little vibration unless the whole truck is vibrating and its easy for them to pinpoint right away. I personally think its the exhaust...there has been a couple other threads on here on the same issue, and its been the exhaust bolts either too tight or too loose. But EVERYONE has gotten the same run around that "its normal" from the dealer....I'm taking mine back until they do something about it, request to test drive with the shop manager. That's what I'll be doing....Im also going to bring im with me these threads and request that they loosen and re-tighten all of the exhaust bolts....don't know if they'll do it, but I'm going to push it. They key is keep bugging them. Hope that helps - your not alone!!!
Jay, thanks for the good info. I have an appt. tomorrow at the dealership. I am definitely taking that test drive with the service manager and getting everything in writing. I'll try to post an update. Can you lead me to the post about the exhaust bolts? I'd like to add this to my documentation.
I cant seem to find the old thread on the vibration fix leading to the exhaust bolts.....they might have deleted the thread, they do that from time to time....however, I was just reading a thread from MrDynamic regarding vibration issues at idle in his DC....seems that his wasnt resolved, that the dealer adjusted the motor mounts and his vibration got worse. So I would have the dealer specifically check the motor mounts, as well as loosen and retighten the tranny and exhaust bolts. Let me know how it pans out.
are any of you who are experiencing vibration at idle through steering wheel and floorboards/pedals have the valor chrome tip on your exhaust?
well, I took my exhaust tip off last night, and the vibration I was feeling through my steering wheel and floorboards has pretty much gone away. Im going to test drive it somemore today, but it feels great so far....weird. there is a metal u-shaped spacer that is loose inside the tip which buffers the space between the tip and the pipe....it gets tightened down with the metal clamp that holds the tip on....maybe this or the pipe hitting the tip could have caused a slight vibration...not sure, but definately something to keep in mind and maybe try if you guys have an exhaust tip on.

Well, it's not just the Tundra, but my Camry, and Sienna both vibrate (Mainly when the a/c is on like you said). I test drove one DC, and felt nothing wrong, or maybe i'm just used to it.

The vibration problem seems to be so widespread, yet there does not seem to be a definite solution.
When I went to the dealership, took in a list defining the symptoms and the possible causes I have discovered, along with copies of the threads from the forum. I had the service manager take a test drive with me in my truck and then we test drove a new truck off the lot. The new DC also had some vibration but not as much as mine.
He seemed pretty genuine and agreed there is a vibration problem on my tundra. He read through all my information and he said he took it as a "challenge" to find out what was going on. I left the truck all day.
They loosened the engine mounts, transmission mounts, exhaust bolts and re-torqued everything back to specs. The driveshaft was okay. It still has vibration.
The service manager said toyota had to make some design changes from the 2004 to 2005 engine to gain the extra horsepower. His personal opinion was the problem lies with resonance created by an increased air movement forced through the air intake manifold.
He said, if I wanted to pursue a correction further, he would file a report and a Toyota regional engineer would come to take a look. He said it never hurts to ask and if you don't ask you don't get anywhere. So I agreed and the report will be sent. I do not hold any real expectations for a cure if it turns out to be a "design flaw" but I am not finished quite yet.
So what's with this vibration problem!! If it is present and noticable in most of the Toyota vehicles, why is it not being addressed?? Why don't owners expect better and ask for corrections? Toyota has to know the origin of the vibration problems by now. I have recently read about the vibration in some Toyotas as far back as the early '90s. This is so frustrating. I am trying to be patient and work with the dealership (still waiting on the regional engineer) but I get irritated everytime I get in the tundra. Who can I write?
