Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "TACOMA:Cold air intake & throttle body spacer - WOW!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have just installed the prototype "Helix Power Tower" throttle body spacer & the "Airmax" cold air intake on my taco & WOW what difference!
The company that makes these is about a mile from my house & I dropped in to see what was new. In the course of conversation I discovered that they had not done a new 05' taco - so mine is the "test pig".
We installed the spacer first & my initial impressions were that I had greatly improved throttle response and that there is noticeably more torque in the 1000-1800 rpm range. The next day (yesterday) we installed the cold air intake & WOW!. Huge power down low & great improvement over the whole rpm range - Not to mention it sounds really cool as well. And the gas mileage seems to be better, I haven't checked yet. (my taco gets 18 - 19 around town & 20-22 freeway)
Anyway, I am gathering data (gas mileage, power, etc) over the next couple of weeks to see if anything can be tweaked before it goes to market. They are going to put the truck on the dyno & get some exact numbers & I'll post them when I have them. I do know this - they took the stock intake set up & put it on their flow machine - the new intake pulls in 32%+ more air than stock!

That's a little harsh wouldn't you say? They are doing R&D, perhaps they don't want to release pictures until it's ready for production?
rocktaco - keep us informed on the progress and dyno numbers.
MK
No..its not harsh...Its no seceret..i am sure the TB spacer looks JUST like the rest of them..and I am sure the intake is just a tube and filter like all the others.
To me when someone tells stuff about all this new stuff they have and no one else heard of or seen...I dont believe its real till I see pics

Nah, I gotta disagree. Worthless without dyno runs! Pre and Post on the SAME TRUCK.
Yeah, need dyno runs to PROVE it does something. Usually it only lightens your wallet and nothing else.

I agree, the only true measure is dyno runs, before and after,, on the same truck. Too many people think that more noise = more power and quite often the reverse is true!

yea and plus on the old 3.4 tacos they where dynoed and the spacer did nothing for it

Well, I don't really see how a TB spacer can help any EFI car at all really. There isn't much heat to insulate from at that point, the inlet and exit sizes are fixed so there is no venturi effect to be had, and you aren't adding to the intake runner length or plenum size so there wont be any effect on the torque band.
Carbs are a different story because well, they can benefit from all of the above!

If your Taco has the inverter, you can buy one of those cute little electric powered leaf blowers and splice it into your intake hose. P.S. If anyone actually tries this, please post pics for my own amusement.
You guys are right, I'm sure the throttle body spacer looks just like every other one from the outside & my intake isn't powdercoated or anything yet - just bare metal. HELLO - its a prototype! The production ones are bright red - look at the website link I left.
Also - I agree - seat of the pants is worthless with out dyno back-up, but we had to make sure it worked at all first. Be patient - I've only had the thing two days.
But all that aside - my truck is a whole new animal, with greatly improved throttle response & low end power.
I'll keep you posted on our progress. I'll post pics if Street & Performance wants me to.
I just got off the phone with Street & Performance, they go forth with the pics you guys want. Soooo, it will probably be this weekend when I get a chance - but I will get them posted!
We will have a dyno run in two weeks - give me time for plenty of gas mileage checks & run checking.
