Default Limited Slip Diff - Gear Oil????

I have a new 2005 Tundra with the limited slip differential. I am nearing the mileage for its first gear oil change. In the past, I've always used synthetic Mobil One gear lube but in non-LSD rear ends.

Is synthetic gear oil suitable? Do I need to add an additive due to the fact that its LSD?

Thanks for the help!

Read the label on the gear oil bottle. If it says that it is suitable for limited slip differentials, then it already has the additive in it. I believe Mobil 1 gear oil does have the additive already mixed in. Yes, synthetic gear oil is completely suitable.

According to Mobil 1
Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid.

Basically, I take this as it should not be needed but might be needed dependent on application. I have read that sythetic gear oil's inclusion of LSD additive is suitable for certain types(older) LSDs but may not really be enough for some of the newer LSD's- I will try to get more info- I was also told thatToyota has a TSB advising dino oil with additive over synthetic.

My experience in using Amsoil 75W-30 Synthetic is that an additive is needed. Amsoil stated that it wasn't necessary but I experienced immediate chatter in the diff even with their Slip-Lok additive.

I added a tube of BG LSII friction modifier and the chatter went away. I now have Mobil 1 in the diff with BG LSII as well. I have no experience with Mobil 1 and no friction modifier.

Search 'LSD oil' and you will find many posts on the subject!

Go to your dealer and ask for the fluid spec sheet for your truck - they can access this and print it for you.

Likely it will still come up with dino gear oil specs for the LSD - with friction modifier. Toyota Canada sells LSD gear oil (see attached image) - repackaged oil from some standard supplier - and specs FORD LSD additive. Yes, FORD!

This is clipped straight from the Eaton site FAQ:
==================

Q - What type of lubricant and limited slip additive should I use with my newly purchased Eaton Limited Slip Differential? [ed: factory Toyota LSD??]

A - Eaton strongly recommends utilizing an API-GL5 approved Mineral-Based 80W-90 Axle Lubricant and one 4-oz bottle of Limited Slip Additive (GM or Ford).
====================

FWIW I use synthetic everywhere else on my truck.

Paul
