Default 2005 5 speed Auto Tranny question?

I'm the proud owner of a new 2005 4wd V8 Access cab and I an still trying to get used to the different nuances between the tranny on my previous 2001 4 speed auto and the 5 speed auto in this truck. The most obvious difference to me is that when going down fairly steep hills this tranny downshifts to provide a "braking effect" similar to a manual transmission which my 2001 (I don't think) ever did. It seems to "kick in" based on how steep the grade is and if I happen to touch my brakes and if I do brake, how hard I brake. I can't seem to figure out a clear pattern of how it is initiated or is it all by "computer" and completely out of the driver's "control"? Thanks!!

Welcome & congrats on your new ride! Yeah, the first time this happened on my 05 I was like what the ? Just as you described...similiar to a manual trans. It was discussed in earlier threads with other 05 5 spd owners. Here's a link:

05 Transmission (cold start)

I've gotten use to it now after 12k & actually like it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the new 05 transmission since I came from a 01 Tacoma with a manual tranny, and this is the first auto I've ever owned. The computer seems to make up its own mind when to downshift but it seems that it can be also triggered by momemtarily using the brakes. Overall i've found it does a pretty good job and allows me to stay off the brakes a lot more.

Ditto here. Once you get used to it, it's great.
