Default Cruise Control "Resume" "Hole shot"

I was driving down the Interstate yesterday and did something I had done many times in 01' Tundra V-8 AC but this new beast caught me by surprise and I wondered if it was typical? I was in the slow lane approaching a car (Cruise set at 65) in front of me and was unable to pull to the fast lane to pass as a car was approaching from behind in that lane. I "released" the Cruise to slow down by blipping the lever towards me and then when the car was past me I pushed up on the lever to resume my speed, pull out and pass. I was originally going about 65 slowed to about 58 and was "resuming" to 65. The truck gradually began to increase speed (as my 2001 used to) but when it hit about 60 all of a sudden it down shifted about two gears and the engine revved to about 3500K+ (in about 1/2 second) and I felt like I was in the Daytona 500! I blipped the cruise again so that it would release and I used the accelerator to get back up to speed and then reset the cruise. I swear my 2001 would pretty much leisurely resume the previous speed without this "hole shot" effect. Is this normal for the new 5 speed? Startling to say the least! Thanks!

I could be wrong... but from my own personal experiences, I've had this happen with nearly every vehicle I've owned (not just Toyotas) that had cruise on it. I "personally" don't like it either, but they ALL seem to "kick" into a passing gear, almost anytime the speed drops 5 MPH or so, "below" what the cruise was previously set at. And if you're "not" expecting it... it sure can make the hair on your neck stand up in rush hour traffic! Matter of fact, in earlier model Toyotas (such as my '95 Tacoma) if your speed drops below 25 MPH (I think it is) the resume button "WON'T" work at all! Not sure about newer models though?! I assume it's basically a safety feature cause... I can only imagine, what would happen, if say... the cruise was set at 55 MPH or so and you hit the resume button from 25 MPH! You'd probably think you were at a NHRA event, by the time you got back up to 55 MPH!

Maybe another member might have a different idea about this...

Still that way today. Although I don't know the specifics of it, other than at below X speed or a difference of X speed it won't resume.

Toyota updated their cruise control this year so that it will resume after you slow below a certain speed (I believe around 35mph).

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

Mine has always done this. Let it drop below about 5MPH below set speed, and when you hit resume, it starts off slow, then it punches it.

My previous vehicle was a manual tranny, so it didn't downshift, but it also would push very hard until it got to speed.

I hate it when that happens! Mine has an odd sense of timing in that it usually down shifts and romps when the radar detector starts going off

I stopped using CC on hilly roads a while back due to this

Actually it just down shifted out of OD in to Drive(form 5th to 4th). The new 5spd autos didnt have any change for the overdrive gearing and instead of 3rd gear being 1:1 now 4th is. I cant stand the cruise in my Tundra because the damn thing is all over the place, on the start of an incline the computer is slow to respond and then when it does it causes the tranny to drop out of OD because the speed has dropped almost 5mph and then goes racing 5 to 10 mph pass the set speed. Unless I'm on a nice flat stretch of road I dont even bother with cruise because I get worse mileage than when I dont use it.

Do they have a software update to fix it on the older ('03) versions. I HATE that when I stop at a toll booth or light I have too reset it every time. I hit MANY rural roads that will be miles of 55-65 and then come across a 30 mph town with a stop light. Blink and your through the town but then need to reset. I can see if you turn car off it loses the setting but if it's still running it should keep that in memory.

It is a pain in the butt to deal with all right. I also don't care much about having the cruise light come on when it's not engaged/operating. I don't know what they did to change the cruises operation. I just remember Glenn (NH Parrot) posting that information along with other changes in the new models.

Yeah that's one thing that bugs me about my 05 tundra. Whenever it hit resume the hammer drops and I get full throttle speed to gain 10 mph back. That does not help gas mileage and as someone else said I also think I get better mileage without using the cruise. My wifes 03 Corolla does not seem to do this but the Tundra does. Very annoying.

I've only had this happen a few times. The first time it did it I had the cruise set on 75. I canceled it for a moment and then resumed it. It kicked down as you all have said, but it surged to about 80 something mph. It then gave no throttle and then surged into the 80's again. I took the cruise off and reset it. It hasn't happend again. Anyone know what happened?

Were you on a incline, decline or level surface? As for the initial surge, every vehicle I've owned has done that.

My 01 is smooth as silk, it will pick up 10-15 mph without downshifting.

Maybe Canadian Tundras are a little more laid-back than mine. My 00 will jerk a kink in your neck going up a slight incline. It's embarrassing at the least. Mine shifts down twice. Like out of OD and then maybe the converter unlocks??
It will surely get your attention.
