Default Transmission quick to shift gears when cold?

I have a 2001 Tundra 4x4 4.7L with 9000 miles on it. When the truck is cold or has not been driven for a few hours, the tranmission shifts awfully quick out of first and second. It's like if I take off to merge into traffic the truck shifts very quickly to 2nd and then to 3rd but will hold third for a long time and then finally go into overdrive and lockup the convertor. After the truck warms up there is no problem at all, and the shifts are what I consider normal. Even giving it a lot more throttle than usual still results in it shifting quickly. I do not recall the truck doing this when it was new and it's kind of a PITA when you're trying to pick up a little speed and the truck shifts through the gears so fast it's struggling to get going. Anyone had a similar experience?

It's normal. It shifts early to keep rpm low to reduce wear when the engine is still cold.

Mine does it too! You don't want to be romping on the throttle when the engine is cold anyway.
