Default Differential Breather Extension

I've not been able to find a thread where someone mentions the thread size on the differential. Someone did say 1/4" but it didn't seem to specify whether that was the thread size and if it was NPT (I assume it is). Does anyone know for sure? I don't really want to pull off the breather and drive to the store with it off.

Dont know the thread size/pitch but, all you need to do is to pry the cap off and use a hose clamp to put a hose on there, works like a charm. The other option is to use a nissan part with a hose barb. I'll try to dig the part # up off of 4x4 wire

Here are a couple of threads that may help:

Extended Rear Differential Breather w/Stock Breather

Have you done the Differntial breather mod?

There was complete step by step insturctions for this mod incuding sizes, etc. in the "mods of the month" thread, but I can't find it. If I locate the info, I will try to post.

Note I have two unions pictured- the one on the right has a ~1/4 barb fitting while the one in the center has a ~3/8" barb fitting - same barb diameter as the breather I have pictured.
----The smaller fittings tend to get clogged more easily when used in the rear diff-

Just get Toyota parts -
90930-03136 (breather)
90404-51319 (union)

some hose clamps & 3/8 ID hose & you should be set

I made a typo on the part number of the breather - but you should be able to read the bag
anyways:
90930-03136 (breather)
90404-51319 (union)

Not sure what thread size it is, but I bought a lnegth of coiled hose to use to extend my diff breather, popped the cap off and the hose wouldn't fit. I removed the little fitting from the diff, went to OSH and found a brass fitting that would do the trick. Took it home, screwed it on and the ran the hose along the frame rail up behind my taillight. I bought a small oil impregnated foam filter from the hobby shop, they use these is gas powered RC cars. Works like a dream...

after I am done fixing all the other stuff I broke I'll extend the front breather, tranny breather, then we'll do an intake snorkel...exhaust snorkel...oops I am getting carried away again!

Don't forget the snorkels for the passengers and K-9. You might as well install a periscope as well.

Mike,

I'm thinking about using the coiled hose too. I like the idea that I don't have to worry about stretching it. But I'm not sure what fitting to buy. Do you have the threading info for the rear axle housing. I know its 14 mm but whats the threading?

Also, I have plans this weekend to go trailing with a bunch of Jeep buddies. They were very impressed with the truck before it was locked (and when I broke it . We're going back to the place I busted her up to reclaim victory . Wish me luck. Oh yeah, the wife will be with me so you know we'll have pics and videos.

The fitting on the diff can be unscrewed with a 14mm ( I think ) Dunno what the threads are...Not sure how available big HW stores are for you. But at the local OSH and Home Depot, they have a big rack of brass fittings with barbs on one side and threads on the other. As I remember, the threads weren't exactly on but I was able to thread it up. If you need to order something online, I would follow the part numbers and photos posted above and perhaps order through the local Toyota place or online. Sorry, I couldn't me more.

I got the coiled hose off some discount tool table at the auto parts store for like 1.99, it's bright orange and built for air tools, but the hose is very stiff and inflexible which made it perfect for my purposes. I had to boil the end of he hose in water for a few minutes to make it pliable, then just slipped it over the barb. When it cooled, it got stiff. It also has anti-kink coils at either end to keep it from bending at the barb. Since I have a bedliner and tonneau I didn't feel like removing all that to get to the drain plug on the bed. If you take off you driver's side tailight, it's pretty clean in there and I figured this would be the perfect place for the little oil impreg. filter. So far, so good.

Good luck on your wheeling trip this weekend, I'll be redoing the front locker with the new coupler on Saturday. Just remember to keep it in a lower gear to keep that front locked, and stomp the hell out of it. Also, remember that there is a break-in period so take it easy for the first few miles...

If you don't want to worry about what size fitting, just pop off the cap, slide on the hose and tighten it with a hose clamp, that's what I did. I believe I used 1/4" or 3/8" ID hose I got from HD. Ran the hoseup through the bed rails and it ends inside my bed box.

A new plug breather from Tyyota of dallas costs

9093003136 PLUG, BREATHER $2.37
9040451319 UNION $4.91
These will both work with Hose (ID 3/8")

The smaller unions ~1/4 opening are more prone to clogging
