It just started a couple months ago. I only have 3500 mi on and it's going in tomorrow for it's first check up.
I'm asking you guys, because you know the dealer will say..... "that's the first time we've ever seen that!!"
Thanks

Word, At first, I was like...TAR. But that's an unbelievable amount of soot....?
I have the silver V6 off-road with 9500 miles and I rarely see any soot on my truck. I wash it nearly every weekend too.
Mine sort looks like that... Eh, I do not think anything of it.

What kind of gas are you running?
I have noticed mine has been doing the same thing - but not as bad as yours seems to be. I run 91 or 93 octane & have 8500 miles on my truck.
Let me know what the dealer tells you.
I have that sh!t on the bottom (inside) of my Valor exhaust tip and its gross...
Mine does the same thing....oddly enough it's worse - like yours - when I am more "into" the gas pedal, if you catch my drift.....

I too have been suffering from poor MPG(never above 15mpg after 2500 miles) and also believe it is from a TOO RICH condition. My truck is black sand pearl, which makes it dificult to notice the "splatter". Although, my co-workers have been busting me about black smoke coming from the exhaust(an indication of too rich an air/fuel mixture) when I leave work, regardless of the amount of time I let the engine warm up. Also, my stainless steel exhaust tip is always covered in black soot. I brought all this up at a recent visit to my dealer and was told by service that if it was running too rich, the check engine light would come on.??? Please let me know if you get a better answer. Good LuckI got 14.2 mpg US, 17.7 mpg Imp on the last tank.
I think it's running waaaaaaaaaay to rich....... Crappy MPG and greasy carbon buildup support that.

I'm starting to wonder if it's your catalytic giving trouble.

I'd rather be ....
1. atv'ing
2. snowmobiling
3. fishing
all of the above!
My tail pipe is clean. I can see bare metal in pipe with slight discoloration of black.I have the V6 with 80% hyway miles at just over 5k on odometer.I was thinking that short trips with mostly city miles will cause this soot accumilation.
You can even see water in the bottom of the tailpipe. What kind of driving do you do, froggy? This does not recessarily look like a problem other than normal condensation, possibly from too many short trips and no time to burn off the water.
What they said about the check engine light rings true. New cars control units are very sensitive to this mixture deal and with several oxygen sensors, they pick up problems very easily.
I confess to mostly "city" driving, but no trips less than 15 minutes in duration. I would not care what comes out the exhaust as long as I got some decent mileage. I'm not expecting 20+mpg, but I'd like to see it get above 15mpg. I've had a few tanks with as low as 12mpg averageWhat kind of driving do you do, froggy? Sometimes I think I'd save more gas running my '89GMC w/33" tires and a 350V8
Seriously though, I'm going try to reset the ECM and teach it all over again now that it is warm. Maybe something got skewed during the winter while I was babying it for the break-in.
