Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Flowmaster or Magnaflow & why?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Im just curious what muffler do you prefer? Any muffler for that matter not just flowmaster or magnaflow. Just want to know what people like and why they like them? thanks
I have a 2001 Access Cab V8, I just put a Flowmaster super 40 in place of my stock muffler and got rid of the factory resonator and it sounds awful. It almost sounds like a v6, its really weird. I have heard a couple trucks with the flowmaster american thunder kit and I think I might go with that now. I had this same muffler on my 02' silverado and it sounded really good, dont know what the deal is with this one. Has anyone tried one of the flowmaster dual kits that are selling on ebay from MagnumExhaust, they are priced @ $199.99 with a dual outlet 40 series flowmaster, (2) 2.25" aluminized tailpipes, all hangers and clamps, and 2 polished chrome tips. The only thing that I dont like is the chrome tips: I live in Maine and they would rust off in 1 winter, I would probably get stainless put on instead. I just noticed you have a tacoma, not a tundra so this info is probably useless, but I had 2 V6 Tacoma's and I put a Jardine 2.5" cat back kit on both of them and I was very happy with the sound and performance.

On the Tacomas, I prefer the Magnaflow 4x14" round case mufflers. They sound deep off the bottom and raspy on top.
Flowmasters and Spintechs growl off the bottom, then become almost silent in the cab around say 4000RPM.

Some of my friends have had Flowmasters. I think they sound pretty good, but they rust really easily. I think it depends on what style of exhaust you are looking for. If you are going with a Cat-Back system I would suggest checking out the Banks Monster Exhaust. That thing is pretty sweet. I personally like a quiet ride, so I haven't messed with my stock exhaust.

I have a single Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Flow, single in; duals out. I really like it alot!!!
I originally went with the 40 Delta Flow. It was a little loud and resonated more than I wanted in the cab. The 50 Delta is a nice fit. Sounds great, top and bottom, without drawing two much attention... except for the dude in the V10 Ford that felt he had to prove something to me last night.
I have pics of my Stainless Steel tips in my gallery.

I personally like the sound of packed mufflers (like Bassani, Borla, Magnaflow, glass packs, etc) over the chambered muffler sound (like Flowmaster, Spintech, etc). I just am not a fan of that hollow echo sound that the flowmaster gives off. I much prefer the deeper, mellow, burbly sound of the packed mufflers. Packed mufflers have a smoother sound IMO. That is just my personal preference.
I do like the sound of the Aero-Turbine. It isn't a packed muffler, but it isn't a chambered one either. It is sort of different, but it does sound good IMO.
This post reveals my goals when picking a muffler though. I do it mostly for sound.

I have a flowmaster and at low end it sounds mellow. when I get it passed and all the way to 5000 it screams, it reminds me of a v8 boat in the water. Deep and loud.
I don't know why mine would sound so much different than the others, I don't have a tinny or hollow sound. Even up to 3000rpm it sounds angry, everyone wants to race me because they think I am getting into it. It's kinda funny, I had a S10 rev it up from one light to another, then I kicked it at the second light and he about crapped his pants. His window was down and the exhaust is loud right in your ear off my truck. He was in the right lane.

I believe that Magnaflow has a chart of the CFM for each muffler (popular) from 5 different companies. Flowmaster is at the lowend, where dynomax and magnaflow are at the top end.
I can't seem to find the page I saw before with the flows, I'll keep looking. But I seem to recal the Flowmaster flowed 350+ cfm where Dynomax flowed 850+ cfm and Magnaflow flowed 1000+cfm

Hate to rain on the party, but what is wrong with silent and strong? I am looking for a muffler that can beat the stock unit in the numbers, but not act as an testosterone alarm clock at 5AM (Like my neighbor). His POS is loud (thrush I think) and I kick his Ford 5.4 butt everytime we meet at a light, but I am very quiet and fast. He is loud and slow. My bride feels bad for his wife because they are so loud but go nowhere. After a run home a quick pick me up (natural male enhancer) is required to get his ying and yang balanced and it is off the store for more POS parts for the Ford. I really like Ray's (moderator) Gibson Stainless for all the reasons above..quiet, kick butt in low end, and as my wife says, would be very manly. Just pass em leaving only a sulfer oder to be detected by thier senses. I had a Gibson Catback stainless w/shorty headers on my F150 w/302 and it was awesome. The company always makes good (I goofed on some clamps during install and they fixed at N/C) and the product fit perfectly from fit and finish and it was quiet, but it screamed. Does Magna or Flow just appeal to those who want to be heard or be seen (in the front of the comp windshield)? Coments?

I hear you, however, even with duals with the dynomax that I have, my truck is not loud, barely above stock (small diameter piping helps) at idle, and does not get entirely too loud until above 3k rpm. This is why I like dynomax, because it is a tasteful note, not a loud abnoxious one. I was not looking for sound when I researched, I was looking for overall performance, and less of a loss of low end torque (small piping helps, because big doesnt always mean better). It does not set off alarms, does not wake the neighbors and does not sound like a fart can at idle. However, everyone has their own opinion of what is best, and a person should not rely on these opinions to make their decision, but heed the suggestions based on what they would like (the person looking for the new exhaust) and others experience. This is my second dynomax system, my first was a single 2.5" from and ultra flow, this is a super turbo with twin 2" piping. I have yet to be dissapointed.

Personally I don't see the point in having a V8 if you can't hear it. I remember when I was looking for a car I wanted a V8 so I could put exhaust on it. I like the loud exhaust. I just think it sounds great. I wouldn't want to listen to a super loud exhaust all the time (especially on long trips) but it wouldn't bother me too much if I had to either. I'm young though and making noise it fun to me. There is just something great about really loud exhaust, especially from a V8.
My dad had a 454 in his dually when I was growing up. He had duals with glass packs on that truck. I think growing up around that sound sort of affected my brother and I. We still love the way that truck sounds and I know he used it as a measure for how he wanted his exhaust to sound on his Tundra. We both used to love the sound of gas exploding in the pipes when letting off the throttle. I know this sounds cheesy but loud exhaust just brings a smile to my face.
I listen to loud cars drive by my window all the time. I actually like it too. I usually try to guess what sort of engine it is, and if I can I will try to guess the car. For example if I hear a turbo flat 4 it know it is a Subaru.

Alright, it looks like we are about even with the magnaflows and flowmasters. But nobody really answered the question. why do you like them? just for the sound? and Jump in HP? MPG? whats your experiance?
I like my Magnaflow because I don't have anymore DRONE. If you want to attract attention to yourself buy a Flowmonster. If you want a decent sounding exhaust without noise inside the cab go with Magnaflow.
