Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Just got SSAUTOCHROME headers installed today", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just the the SSAUTOCHROME headers and Y-Pipe installed today for $328.00. The truck felt more powerfull in the whole RPM range, the noise in the cab is much louder(sounds weird, almost like its leaking) Also on the driver side header, there is a wire/hose? that comes fromt the firewall and it extremely close to the header. I think its touching and melting the plastic covering on the wire. What can i do to protect that wire, i will post a picture soon to show everyone what im talking about.

That wire (cable) is most likely the shift cable going to the transmission. If it melts through, you'll immediately lose any ability shift the transmission in or out of gear. Tie that cable as far away from headers as you can.

thats the shifter cable. You need to bend the bracket, which holds that cable, back. You'll see it, just follow the cable from the firewall. The bracket bends pretty easily by hand. Just make sure you do this ASAP or you'll need a new cable.
EDIt Woops, sorry Ray, ya beat me to it!

Thank you guys for the information, i just went out and bent the bracket a bit. The wire is away from the header, but im worried that it could come loose and touch the header. Also since there is no heat shield, will it affect the wires, cables, and hoses around the headers? Also can the protect the transmission shifter cable with some kind of insalation?
did you reset your ECU by unplugging the neg. batt. cable for 30 min? Also, the ECU needs to re-adjust, dont expect to feel any gains for ~500 miles or so.
the battery was out for 2 days while i was attempting to install them myself, then i installed the battery and drove to the shop. I will unhook the negative wier on the battery for 30 minutes tommorow.
I have had my autochrome headers for a little over a year now and in the last few weeks have been getting a lot of ticking noises from under the hood. So I took it into the muffler shop that did the install for me and they said I'd blow the gaskets out on both sides near the back. So after being without a truck for a week, the new gaskets came in this morning and they tried to do an install... only to find that the headers are warped.
What should I do?? Has anyone else had this problem with the Autochromes??
I can't afford JBA's, and don't want to buy another set of Autochromes if they are going to do this again...
Can they pull the header flanges straight by tightening the bolts 1/3rd tight starting at the center and working toward both ends, then 2/3rds tight, again starting at the center and working toward the ends, then fully tight, starting at the center again?
I'd sure give that a try before I took the headers off and to a machine shop for surfacing. Are you using OEM gaskets from Toyota?...highly recommended.
Ken

I will have to wait until Monday to talk to the muffler shop since they are closed on the weekend. But I am pretty sure if they could be used with your tightening method these guys would have tried it. They've been in the business for 50 years. But never hurts to ask right!
As for as machining them flat again, I think it will depend on how much they are warped. I don't want to machine them down too much, making the flanges really thin.
And lastly I was not using toyota gaskets, they ordered these gaskets from JBA...
get the oem gaskets they are much better, i used my old gaskets and have no problems they would need to be badly warpd for the gasket to blow i bet that they never tightend it very well in the first place, get oem gasket and they will tighten better the second time it

I had an SS Autochrome header for my Subaru WRX that was warped when I got it. I tried lots of stuff to get it to stop leaking. I think I finally used factory gaskets for a good seal. Good luck with it. I will not buy from them again.
Thanks guys. I will definitely tell the muffler shop guys that you all recomend the toyota gaskets. At this point I'll try anything to not have to spend a ton of money again!!!
So I finally got an email back from the people at SS Autochrome, and it only took them five days to respond...
I explained my problem and here's what I got in response:
"HEY OUR ITEMS ONLY HAD A MAXIMUM WARRANTY OF 1 YEAR. DO YOU HAVE A COPY OF YOUR AUCTION SHOWING A LONGER ONE."
No I'm sorry this happened, maybe we can help you out, just two sentences basically trying to take the responsibility off of themselves.
I also found out today that their headers are not smog legal in California... might be a good thing for them to post on their adds when they are selling them!!
Extremely disappointed in my overall expierence with the company itself and their product. I would recomend to any of my fellow tundra owners to steer clear of Autochrome...
I have 2 1/2 years now on the SS autochrome headers an no issues. If I where you, I will send the Headers to a machine shop and have them milled to get them straight again. Should not cost you no more that 80 dollars to do.
just my opinion.
