Default Exhaust noise or so I thought. FIXED!!!!!

my 2001 with the v8 seemed to have an exhaust leak, but get this...

1) at idle cold or hot you could not hear any leak.
2) at around 1800 rpm you would hear it under accelleration through out the rest of the powerband. (it is not as easy to hear when you are power-breaking with the hood up but when going down the road it is VERY LOUD)
3) toyota dealership heard it and said "cracked manifold", replaced drivers side manifold.
4) noise still there.
5) I took it back to dealership they kept it for a day and said "we have no idea what it is we took apart your whole exhaust and inspected every weld, gasket and pipe and can not find any leaks. (btw I am not mad at all with the dealership these guys have been great at Kenny Kent Toyota).
6) over the weekend I reinstalled my cold air intake on a huntch.
7) I can hear that noise a bit now through the intake !!!!!!
8) I do notice a bit of a shutter (extremely mild feels like a miss) when I am under heavy accelleration too.

I am thinking that I have a problem with one of my driver's side exhaust valves. Under no-load conditions the airflow is ok but under heavy-load there does not seem to be enough exhaust flow for that one cylinder.

Is this even a possablility? I do not know what the valvetrain looks like under those valve covers.

Any thoughts???

I seem to have the same noise from the driver's side, but not as loud as you describe. However, there are days that it is louder than others and days I don't hear it at all. I've chaulked it up to piston slap, but it could be something else...

The dealership ruled out pistonslap. but it is the same way for me some days it is louder than others. But it does not happen at all when it is not under load. From what I have read most piston slap problems could be heard through out the full range of accelleration and idle.

I hope it is not piston slap my warranty will not cover that.

Default Fixed!!!!!

You will not believe this but....IT IS NOW FIXED.

The stearing collumn firewall boot had wore out completely...the center section was sliding up and down the shaft and closing and opening the hole allowing the exhaust noise from the manifold on the driver's side (only an inch away) to enter the cab while under acceleration....

Total cost to repair. $35.00

When the dealership said they wanted to replace it. They sure have won my respect.
