Default Poor Main's Synthetic Transmission Fluid?

This was interesting. A guy here at work just had a transmission rebuilt on a Dodge Ramcharger by a reputable transmission place. They guy told him that most people are putting synthetic fluids in their transmissions now but he did not want to spend the extra money. The owner of the place told him he could add normal transmission fluid and substitute one quart with straight 30 weight synthetic motor oil.

Now, the guy I work with rebuilds/tinkers with numerous cars a year and thought this did not sound like a good idea. But, the transmission place still warranties their transmissions with this type of fluid replacement.

Sounds like the concept of a synthetic blend. There are many potential problems with this, however. The additive package is different between ATF and engine oil, the viscosities are different, the ratio may not be ideal, etc. If you want a blend, buy a blend, but I don't recommend mixing your own blend at home...

Unfortunately, I don't know of a synthetic blend ATF on the market. But keep in mind that the gap between synthetic and conventional ATF is one of the largest in the lubrication industry -- synthetic ATF is really that superior to conventional ATF.

I don't think so. Which one:

By the way, I'd never add anything except the correct ATF to an automatic transmission. If a guy wanted some of the synthetic properties, he could add some synthetic ATF, but I don't think it'd do enough good to be worth the money. All syn ATF is a good idea for folks who heavily load their drivetrain.

Well, according to the bottles of Pennzoil ATF that we put in my friends newly rebuilt Corvette AT it is a synthetic blend. I was going to use some to top mine off but after I saw that I didn't want to mix it with the regular. I will check again to make sure, but I am about 99% sure that is what was on the bottle.
