Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "MY GOD! $138+ For a Friggin' O2 Sensor!!!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Granted it's been a few years, since I've actually had to replace one on "any" vehicle, but the problem is... this is for a 1995 Tacoma?! That's just friggin' ridiculous! I replaced one about 5 years ago, and the price was WAY LESS than a 100 bucks (i.e. about $80)!!
To me, this is just WRONG... period! Let's call it what it is... PRICE GOUGING! IMHO, dealerships are "inflating" the price for these damn things, becuse of all this "new" emissions mess that has just been passed, within the last couple of years. They know we've gotta' have it, just to even pass an inspection, so (I think) the philosophy is... "let's just reem 'em" (i.e. the customer)! Here's a simple comparison for you on an O2 sensor for a 1995 BMW. You'd certainly "think" being a BMW, the cost would be quite high... right? Maybe $200+? Nope... it's only $20 more??!!
The way I see it, if they (the Toyota dealerships) can sell it for less than a $100 once, they can damn sure do it again! I honestly, just cannot see ANY way, inflation has caused this much of a price increase, on this one small item!
Any of you guys have ANY ideas as to... "WHERE"... I might find these O2 sensors any cheaper?! Preferably...under... a $100! Fact is, I don't even know, "which" one it is yet (i.e. the front one [near the manifold] or the rear one [near the cat])??? And to even find that out, I've got to have the truck "hooked" up to a diagnostic computer. If I do that at a dealership, they're SURE to charge me an arm & a leg for just that info alone!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Dave

Dave, Did you try your local Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, NAPA, etc. or any of the other local parts stores. They are usually a lot cheaper and offer a guarantee as well.

Hey Bob,
Well, I've actually "considered" doing that, but I've already had one bad experience going that route before and it's made me somewhat "gun-shy".
Lemme explain...
My wife's BMW had the check engine light come on, and from the start, I suspected the O2 sensor. Buying one from a BMW parts department, would simply have been astronomically priced, or so I thought and thus I opted to try one of the places you've recommended. Upon trying to buy one from Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, NAPA, etc., I realized that ALL you were getting was "just" the sensor and not the attached wiring harness! If I used one like that, it would mean having to cut the original wiring harness off the old O2 sensor and then "splice" it onto the new sensor?! Uh, Un... no... I wasn't about to "jerry-rig" that small of a part, on that type of car and then have something else go wrong, that I couldn't fix and end up having the dealership tell me, it was because of the way I'd hooked up an "aftermarket" O2 sensor!
As it turned out, the dealership "was" actually CHEAPER and of course, the OEM part, came with the wiring harness!
I'm still "P.O.'ed" over the price! There's just simply no logical reason for it?!
Many thanks though, for your help...
Dave

tell me about it. I have 2 bad o2 sensors. I was reading around on this site, and saw the warranty extension deal, called toyota customer care, and now i have an appointment tomorrow to have both o2's replaced for FREE! super stoked about that
Dave, you are right. It is a ripoff! I bought one for my old 95 non-tacoma pickup for less than a $100 at the dealer a couple of years ago. There is a way to diagnosis which sensor because my truck had both sensors too. I had read on either 4x4wire or 4x4pickup (before my tundra) that there is an easy procedure to pull the codes yourself. I printed it out & gave it to a mechanic friend who did it and I counted the flashes. After which he confirmed which sensor with a multimeter (since there were two). Mine was the sensor closes to the exhaust. A google search or maybe another more informed member may know the process. I hope you are able to get the work done reasonably. Is Carson's prices cheaper?
You've got my attention. Found some help full information at this site... O2 Sensors However, it left me a little puzzled?! The below info is the closet info to my '95 Tacoma.
Problems is... mine "is" a 4WD...and... it's also an automatic?! So which one do I use?
Tried the other site (www.sparkplugs.com), but found that really confusing. I couldn't find anything on O2 sensors?! Not even through doing a search on the site!
Anyway, back to the one that "did" produce. Which part number should I be looking at? The one's for the 4WD or the one for the Automatic?
Either way... MANY thanks for the links.
Dave

I replaced both of my Tundra's front O2 sensors last year and I got the parts off of an internet OEM site for $80 each - free shipping. Sorry, I don't know the actual site anymore.
On the sparkplugs site, after you input your vehicle specs the 1st thing you get is all of the different sparkplug listings. Near the top of the page is a drop down menu that will change the product list from plugs to o2 sensors
They list the 234-4162 for the front and 234-4206 for the rear for the v6 4x4 auto tranny
I'd email Gadget (his user name on the tacoma territory board), the guy who runs URD.
Good luck!
