This is a discussion thread titled "Blew up rear end", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
tires are 265/75 BFG all terrains
has towed a lot, had a ton of abuse on it, been jumped and just beat to the ground
today i got this horrible sound comin from the rear end, then i felt it popping, spiders are popping and jerking around turns and you can hear a grinding noise, its NO good at all!!
takin it to a stealership tomorrow to see what the problem is, this one is goin to hurt the wallet!!
hmm...jumping the truck?? why in the world would you do that? this is your chance to beef up the rear end LSD or Locker time better yet. currie ford 9" with 4.56s and an ARB locker...thats what I plan on doing when i get a new job.

how much would that setup cost you? When i drained my diff fluid i found a few teeth that came out. Eventually i wanted to go with a LSD, re-geared, and disk brakes. My plan was to get all that from a Ford expedition.
I just had the same exact problem last week. I killed the spider gears..... had it rebuilt and just got my truck back yesterday actually. how many miles?

I've been quoted about 2300 bucks for a completely trussed, lengthened, disc brakes, locker and gears... not bad, considering its pretty much the strongest sh*t you can buy.
i didnt know about the 5 year 60k powertrain warranty, that covered it
lalo, i have accidently kept in the pedal a few times and when ya land and the tires catch that shock load of wheel speed change can blow rear ends up, did it to a buddies class 8 style truck last weekend, blew spider gears through the cover.

awesome. wish i could have been there to see that class 8. Shoulda had them slap in that TRD LSD while they were in there and the warranty was taking care of it.
went and saw my old third member today, one spider gear was missing about a 4th of the teeth. new third member should be in today, will probably be done sometime this afternoon, but I have to go to work, so i wont be able to get it until tomorrow. i wish i coulda had an lsd thrown in, but i gotta start savin for my new project chase truck
Do you have any idea what that third member would have cost. My 2000 seems to have a lot of play in the gears to the point that I get a strange double thump when I put it in gear. Also when going from coast to power I get bump like the play in the gears has to be taken up.
no idea on the cost, i didnt get to see any of that and didnt ask to. i just paid the 54 bucks shipping to overnight the new third member chunk here so it would be done in a matter of just 3 days

Brandy new third member's will cost about $1500-$1800 (my buddy just had one done on his 2001 Tundra)
If you frag an open rear, it's probably best to NOT put another open rear. The side gears on these trucks are so very small, I am surprised I don't see more failures on the site. I have blown two front diffs already, I can't manage to break the lockers and I've tried. If you blow it out, stop driving it--if the ring and pinion are in good shape, get a locker and just replace the bearings.
The slop you have could be a result of driveline slop, if you lube the heck out of your slip joint--that should help immensely (seriously, like 20-30 pumps)
Upgrades: PA 3" Body Lift, Powertrax No-Slip rear, Detroit ezLocker front, Fabtech/Fox front, Wheeler's AALs, TC Front Diff Drop, 16 x 8 MB Wheels, 285/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs, Pioneer Head Unit, Infiniti Reference speakers [front and rear], 150 W bridged amp to bandpass enclosure, 6 CD changer with IR remote, iPod mini and xm hardwired into stereo, Toyota drop in bedliner, and Tonneau cover
