Default Who has removed the resonator on the TRD exhaust?

I'm wondering who has removed the resonator on the TRD exhaust? What did it do? More drone at 2K I assume. Is it louder overall though?

Any speculation as to what this will do?

Are you referring to the TRD Off Road (Factory) exhaust, or the TRD Dual Exhaust? I installed a Magnaflow muffler thinking that with my headers it was going to be pretty much like my Flowmasters used to sound, only all coming out of the factory single tail pipe. But, it wasn't. In fact, it didn't sound much different than the factory muffler. So, I took the resonator off and you are right - serious drone at highway speed which is where I do most of my driving. In town it wasn't too bad if you kept your foot out of it. I reinstalled the resonator with the SS Y-pipe last weekend and got almost exactly the sound I was looking for. A deep roar when you step on it, and a nice soft rumble when it idles. Jessy, you were right - I should have listened to you to begin with.

Hope that helps.

I was talking about the TRD duals. I'm not down for a ton of freeway drone because I'm going to be doing a lot more freeway driving next year. Peoples tolerance is always different though.

How much would it run me to have it cut out and replaced with a straight pipe? If it isn't much I might just try it.

Just a SWAG I would say $20-$30. It's one of those things where it pays to shop around. Good Luck and let us know how that turns out for you.

I guess I will shop around. For 20-30 I would be willing to experiment. I will let you guys know the results if/when I do this.

Yep, I cut my resonator out of my 00' and didn't really get the sound I was after either. I wanted it to be louder when I stepped on it, and it wasn't any louder at higher rpms. The sound was not as tuned as with the Flowmaster 40 series and the stock resonator.

On my new 05', I put the new Super 40 Flowmaster and was contemplating cutting the resonator out, but would rather have a louder muffler than have more sound at 2000rpm only.

I'm not sure about the whole Y pipe thing? Did that really help with the higher rpm sound?

How hard is it to remove the resonator (and reinstall)? I have a Borla, which I love, but I would like for it to be louder.

The resonator is a solid piece (actually part of the Y pipe) and the rear part of the assembly has that donut type gasket and clamp. To remove it and reinstall it you would have to cut the pipe on both ends of the resonator and weld a piece of pipe of the same length back on and leave the clamped joint at the rear of the resonator, or just cut the pipe coming from the cat to the resonator and then cut the pipe after the donut joint and weld a piece of pipe back in the space. Either way you're going to have to cut and weld to get a good tight fit so it's probably not something that most owners would want to try just for the sake of a different sound, and then have to reinstall it if they don't like it. I can tell you that removing it not only will make it louder, but you will no doubt experience the same drone that everyone else has.

That said, I was thinking about the drone symptom today and it seems to me it is really caused by the exhaust pipes vibrating, so I was wondering if it could be resolved by welding a brace somewhere or maybe just take a piece of round 3/8-inch stock and weld it to the pipe, on one side or the other, length wise sort of like a spine. That might deaden the vibrations enough to remove the drone. If you look at your stock Y pipe, it has a small brace welded to the curve where it turns toward the driver's side. Might be worth a try!

Default I took out my resonator last week

I took mine out last week (factory exhaust on my 2001 with headers) and there is no drone on mine!!! the shop that did the work cut in a new "Y" pipe and welded the whole thing together and reused the hanger brackets. The exhaust is really free-flowing now and I now have more accelleration when I approach 70 to 80mph, it actually feels like my power curve has got unlimited power post 3200rpm.

BUT NO DRONE!! might be as stated before an exhaust pipe vibration.
