Question Replacing Oxygen sensors: which brand

I'm having a local muffler shop install my new JBA headers and was going to install new oxygen sensors as the light is already on.

My question(s) are:

Is $250 a reasonable price for the replacement of the headers? I know time is money but just checking.

Are all oxygen sensors the same, other then the ones that come with the OEM connectors? Can I save a couple of bucks here by getting some thing other then say Bosch?

Default O2 Sensors

As far as price for the header im not sure what they go for But on the o2 sensor Bosch direct fit sensors are a great product. I know when I purchased a Bosch o2 for my old 1991 4runner there was a Factory Nipon Denso in the box. As long as you go with the direct fit ( factory connector) Bosch, Denso , or even walker should be fine. PM me if you need a part number . Price wise ,Most expensive to least Bosch , Denso then walker .

Not sure about the "price" given to you on the header install, since I've never opted for a set? At least not yet... . However, I can tell you (from what I've read here at TS.com) header installations on the Tundra are a real B!TCH! Although, you [yourself] "can" do it.

What I can offer you though, is some insight on the O2 sensors. Depending on "what" you end up going with, it WILL make a difference! If you opt to go the "cheapest" route, you'll probably be sorry you did, in the long run. The cheaper sensors out there, DO NOT come with the OE wiring harness/"connector" for a plug-n-play type scenario. What you (or the muffler shop in this case) will have to do is, take the old sensors and clip-off the wiring harness and then, splice it onto the new sensors. Short-n-sweet... BAD idea! However, there ARE alternative OE O2 senors out there, which DO have the connector "attached" and that's what I'd recommend you use. They're almost half the price of an O2 sensors from Toyota at $140+ each! Here's one of the few places I've found O2 Sensors at a decent price.

Hope this helps...

One other question if I may. How do I reset the check engine light?

Disconnect the negative lead on the battery for at least 30 minutes. I let mine stay disconnected overnight, but I think the general conscientious (here at TS.com) is 30 minutes...

$224 is what I paid for the new set of o2 sensors. The new set supercedes buying them seperately from the dealership. I didn't mind paying it. They come with the antiseaze already on it.

I paid $300 to get my headers installed. When I took the right side off later to replace an o2 sensor, it took 3 hours to take of, put in o2 sensor, new gasket and put back on. this time did NOT include puting the truck on jacks, and getting all the tools together before starting, and I had another guy helping, and I'm a hack.

Thanks for the link. I don't see a difference between the left and right O2 sensor though? Aren't they different? I see a different part numbers other places.

Depends on your VIN number in some cases, as well as, your engine (i.e. V6, V8, etc.)

I can see that they are different for V8 and V6 yes, but VIN too?

Looking on the bottom of this page I don't see a difference.

Anyone point me in the right way for a 2000 V8 2WD pre Cat left and right O2 sensors?

Thanks all in advance.

O.K., looking at the info at the bottom of this page, I'd have to assume that both exhaust manifold O2 Sensors are the same as they are considered the "front" sensors, while the "rear" one IS different.

Keep in mind, I'm basing that, on what I've seen with my early model Tacoma. Like you, I too was confused over part numbers. You would "think" that the "front and "rear" (i.e. before and after the cat) would be different. Instead the ones on my Tacoma are the SAME... "front" AND "rear"... go figure?!

Since the new Tundras utilize a sensor on each manifold "plus" one behind the cat (I think), it doesn't make much sense that Toyota would use 3 different O2 sensors?! Especially when 2 of the 3, are basically registering the same emmissions info, from relatively the same spot on the engine... just opposite sides. That's kinda' why I think the 2 on the manifolds (i.e. "front") are the same, with a different one "behind" the cat.

That's my hypothesis anyway...

If all else fails, try calling Denso (the company that makes the sensor) at their technical hotline (800-336-1123) and see what they have to say.
