My 05 Tacoma has 1,400 miles on the orginal oil from the factory. If i'm gonna go synthetic motor oil how much longer should I wait till I change over to synthtic? What is a good brand of synthetic oil thats not to expensive? Thanks for any info

I'd change with conventional oil now, then go to synthetic at 5000. I prefer to get any breakin particles and manufacturing debris out of the engine with a short interval flush with lower cost oil.

Mobil 1 is always good and fairly priced. Schaeffer is excellent. Castrol Syntec is OK. I don't think Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Redline are worth the money.

I beleive a longer period of having dino oil in the engine initiially is better for breakin. Not a scientist or anything but have owned enough new vehicles and played with this duration that I now go about 8k depending how it's driven before changing to synth.

On my 01 Taco I went to synth (M1) first change (~100 miles) and noticed consumption (very very minor albeit, <.75qt per 4k) thereafter. Since then I have always waited. The best result thus far was my 97 civic which I switched to syn about 7k or so. At 56k when I got rid of it, the oil that came out after ~4.5k changes looked slightly darker then what I was replacing it with.

I love Amsoil, and depending what you're changing oil on it's cheaper. Prolly M1 or Rotella if you're a 1 car household.

I changed to Mobil1 Syn. at 893 miles Iam at 4978 now and gonna change it again this weekend. The oil looks like it will go another 2 or 3K but I want to get on scheldule with the Toyota Passport and do it every 5K from here on out. I keep a sample from each change (in small glass jars) I will post pictures and test results after 40 or 50K. I called Toyota and told them what I waz doing, they said it waz cool as long as I went by the Passport Schedule and That I could never change back to regular oil, if I did it would void the warranty. I got the one gallon jugs (4quarts) on sale at K-Mart for 18.99. Goodluck and I second the "Your truck will Love U"

Take mine to the dealer every 3,000 miles and keep it at that... I have run amsoil, mobil 1, and castrol gtx dino oil... I found the Castrol to be a better product...

What are they basing that on? As that makes no sense.

I'd suggest anyone that owns a vehicle read the full version of this http://www.motoroilbible.com/
it will dispell many of the myths and misconceptions that pop up time and time again in discussions like this one.

I have read numerous studies (done by unbiased scientists) and although Mobil 1 has some slightly better ratings for viscosity, etc., good 'ol Castrol GTX is one of the best oils you can buy. And its only $7 for a 5 quart jug at Walmart. I wouldn't waste money on the expensive synthetics.

I used to work for a major oil company as one of those scientists. trust me, Mobil 1 is the one and only in all my vehicles--period.

If you rent a vehicle for 2 years or so then your argument has merit, but for those of us who extend drains, keep the vehicle till it dies and want the best lube available synthetics are the ticket.

All my vehicles including my YZ 125 get full synthetic.

Ha... I suppose you spend the extra on "motorcycle specific" synthetics too? They are no better than GTX. Its all marketing. Period.
