Default K & N oil & Air filters?

Does anyone here use either the K & N oil or air filter?

I am trying to get the best possible performance and quality for my vehicle at a reasonable price, and would like to know of anyone's experience and opinion's on these filters.

The air filter was recommended by a friend of mine at work, and also, by an Advance Auto Parts Sales person.

And of course, how about the filters, do they meet or exceed the toyota filter that is recommended for my vehicle.

The K&N oil filter is made by Champion Laboratories who also make many other brands. The filtration is average, the construction is very stout, and the flow rate is high for modified engines with high output oil pumps. It offers no special benefit to a stock
engine.

The K&N air filter is a subject of great debate. The fact that there is no concensus says a lot. I won't use one. In many cases it allows more dirt to pass into the engine. Some folks think it offers more flow, but so what. The throttle plate is restricting the air flow, doing its job, at all times except full throttle.

The best oil filters are probably OEM, Purolator Pure One, and Mobil 1. I think the best air filter is the OEM filter.

Appearantly the K&N filter lets a lot more particles into your engine. I had one for about a month and decided to go back to the stock filter because the stock one is better at keeping particles out of your engine. Stock air filter also has way more surface area. You can have my K&N filter. $20 with the recharging kit. I have it in the original box still.

That's dissappointing, I was hoping that it would be a better filter than the stock Toyota filter......, and with so many people saying that it gave them more horsepower, and better mileage.....

So being cautious, I will most likely not buy that filter.

I have used K&N air filters on my vehicles, for several years. I don't find them to be a source of any problems. The basis for their technology is simply an oil-wetted cotton gauze-type of media. We used oil-wetted excelsior-based, aka "oil bath", air cleaners for many years. Seems to me that the gauze material is a lot finer meshed, than the excelsior that was in the old oil-bath air cleaners.

Nowadays, there are several manufacturers who have essentially copied the technology. So, in addition to the red filters from K&N, there are yellow ones and blue ones, from other manufacturers. I have used them on Honda, Fords and GM products, as well as my Toyota's. Got one on my Tundra and on my '69 Chevy. Gonna put one on my Lexus, next.

As for oil filters, I don't use anything but a Toyota filter, on a Toyota engine. Call me whatever you want, but that's just what I do. I had a concern a few years ago, with a NAPA Gold filter that seemed to loose its' "prime" when parked. My local store didn't sympathize with me, and I haven't bought another NAPA filter, since.

What about the K&N oil possibly getting on that built in cloth "screen" or whatever it is just down stream of the filter. The cloth "screen" looks to be built into the intake manifold. This is on a 2005 Tacoma with the V6.

Thumbs up OEM and Mobile 1

The best air filter is the OEM Toyota for the smallest particle filtration AND good flow. The best oil filter is debatable in these threads, but lots of research has proven to me that the Mobil1 oil filter is the best flowing and has smallest particle filtration. It is the most expensive oil filter out there but as with most things, you get what you pay for. In my truck, it's Mobil1 oil filter AND Mobil1 oil. I won't need to change my air filter for some time because I live in a very dust free part of Florida (FL is actually just a big sand bar anyway) but when I do need one it will be OEM Toyota.
