Default Low Idle

Hello: I need some help for my 2000 Tundra. I have not been driving it much lately since I purchased a new Matrix to save on gas. The last time I drove the Tundra was a little over a month ago, about 5 weeks. When I tried to start it two days ago it did not turn over and I found out that the battery was dead. Instead of jump starting it I decided to replace the battery since it was getting old anyway. I am not sure how long the battery was gone but the truck ran fine the last time I used it.

I bought a new battery and it started right up. The idle was ok for about 5 minutes then started getting lower. Thinking that maybe I needed to drive the truck so the ECU could relearn after the extended period of time that the battery was dead I took it out on the road. Now when I come to a stop the idle drops to zero on the tach and I have to restart. I have to keep my foot on the gas and brake with my left foot to try not to stall.

I am not sure whether the dead battery has anything to do with this problem or its something else. Maybe since I have not driven the truck for some time that something else is wrong. I did a search on previous posts and read about the throttle body cleaning. Also maybe I need to try some fuel cleaner/additive since the truck has not been used but could 5 weeks of non-use do any harm.

I started the truck this morning and the idle was fine for about 3 minutes then dropped until the engine cut out so something about the engine warming up seems to be a factor.

Any suggestions on what to try first before taking it in to a shop for repair. Thanks.

Lightbulb Idle low

My 2001 was idling low around 300-500 so I took it in and they did a cleaning for $124. Now I am having to problems. It had died on me once so I was concerned. Runs like new now.

Hope this helps.

Default its a do it yourself job

Buy some throttle body cleaner and do it yourself. It is a very easy job to do and there are insructions in the garage section. You would however have to buy a membership to get access to the garage.

Cleaning the throttle body intake (yourself) is an excellent suggestion. If you haven't driven the truck very much since you installed the new battery, that will help as well. It takes more than a trip around the neighborhood for the ECU to re-learn your driving habits. If neither of those are successful, you might want to pull your plugs and see what kind of condition they are in.

I have found that putting amsoil pi in the fuel works wonders on injectors. I have worked on vehicles for over 30 years professionally and it has been the only thing that I have found that does a good job other than using the dealership machines to clean them.

I had the exact same symptoms and went down the same road. New plugs, fuel filter, cleaned the MAF. Then cleaned the throttle body today and now good as new! It was really dirty. My truck is a 2000 with 89000 miles. I am glad to have it running right again.

Thanks for all the information! You guys were right again.
