Default 4-Wheel Low

Cannot get 4 wheel into 4 low; 4 high works fine, but 4 low just flashes (light on switch) and then goes out. Any ideas on possible cause?

Are you switching from H2 to L4? I believe you have to switch from H2 to H4 and then to L4. From H4 to L4 you have to do it in neutral.

Cool

For the most part, the truck is smart enough not to let you break it, even if you're trying . 2hi to 4hi can be done on the fly, I've gone from 2hi to 4hi up to about 40mph in heavy snow. getting in to 4lo requires the truck to be completely stopped and in neutral, or you will break things...the ecu is programmed to prevent this, and consequently sounds a warning and/or flashes the light on the button to remind you. if you're going from 2hi to 4hi, the light on the instrument panel will flash if the actuators haven't fully engaged, this just means you need to let the truck roll forward a foot or three. dont ever shift to 4wd or from 4hi to 4lo with a load on the engine; in other words, let off the accelerator if shifting 2hi-4hi or vice versa, and *always* make sure the truck is completely stopped before shifting from 4hi-4lo or vice versa.

For starters, you have to be in Neutral with the brake applied before you can shift from 4Hi to 4Lo. The system won't engage 4Lo otherwise.

If it still won't shift, I would suspect a faulty actuator motor. Some early 2000 models had mis-machined actuator rods that caused problems when shifting into 4Hi or 4Lo. If it is still under warranty I would let the dealer sort it out.

Talking hang on!

Once you get the thing to go into 4WL, be prepared to hang on when it upshifts!
