Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Problems...Please Help", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am having hell of a problem with my Tundra, ever since the day I bought the Truck. I love the Tundra it kicks butt and it does the job better than any other truck I have had except though I have so many problems that have yet to be fixed. First is that the Idle drops at times when I am at a stop. The Idle will drop and the engine will start shaking real bad then it comes back up. Next is that I have had problems starting my truck. Sometimes it takes up to 15 turns+ in order to get it started..or it wont start at all at times. And last but not least I have had the engine turn off on me twice in the past 1 1/2 months while driving. Please let me know if any of you have had this problem and have had it fixed or not. Thanks
Ok, I'll bite, and ask the obvious question. Have you taken your truck back to your dealer and explained the problem to them to see if they can diagnose it? Is the check engine light comming on? Have you made any modifications to your truck?
The first thing I would do is disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes and let the ECU reset itself.
It could be any number of things. Maybe bad gas, or a malfunctioning O2 sensor. (I think you would get a check engine light then).
But if you truck is that new, I would take it back to the dealer first.
Thanks for the reply but I have taken it in multiple times to the dealership. They give me the same answer over and over again "They cannot duplicate the problem". I will try the battery thing after I get it back from the dealership on Friday. I really hope that something gets done soon cause this is frustrating me. I just bought this 5 months ago and it's been nothing but problems. I have done no mods to it. I would have but due to all of the issues I have had I choose not to add or modify anything. I also tried different gas but that wasn't it either.
Thanks again
How many miles do you have on the truck? Could it be a spark plug (or 2)? Or maybe a coil pack or some electrical problem? Do you drive in the dirt a lot? Have you checked the throttle body?
WOW. I have (fortunately!) never heard of this happening. I'm no mechanic, but here's what I'm thinking...maybe this will help jog someone else's train of thought.
Does it sound like the engine is about to die, then catching again when you're stopped? If so, perhaps the engine isn't receiving fuel, or isn't sparking on all cylinders for a moment or two. Gas wouldn't cause this...I just use the standard 85 octane, and I'm not particular about where I buy it. I suppose it could be related to the O2 sensor(s), but even if they're malfunctioning it shouldn't do what you're describing...I'd think it would be more erratic.
I have experience occassional difficulty starting the truck, but only occasionally, and only when it's very hot outside, as in full heat of summer during mid-day in Colorado. It does take quite a few turns to catch the engine, and I occasionally have to give it a little gas to get it to catch, but like I said this is rare and only during very hot weather when the truck has been sitting in the sun all day.
If it keeps up and they can't fix it, ask for a new truck...something is unfortunately very wrong with yours.

It definitely sounds fuel system related. Maybe bad fuel (water or contamination) or low fuel pressure? I would have the dealer check the fuel system pressure and if it is low, I would suspect the fuel pump is causing the problem on a new vehicle. If you aren't getting results at your current dealership, try another one. They are not all equal as many here will agree.
I would agree with arkie. It sounds like a fuel system or possibly computer issue. If the computer is malfunctioning then it could effect the fuel system intake. There also may be an air intake problem, however it sounds more fuel related.
I would like to thank all of you who replied to this. I didn't expect this much feed back, since it was a Toyota tech. who refered me here. I will go to Toyota and ask them to check the fuel pump and other things you all recommended. And to answer some other questions some have asked...This truck has only 11,000 miles on it and all were done on the highway. I don't trust the truck enough to start getting adventurous. I noticed all of the problems 1 week after I drove the truck off the lot. I was told that the engine needed to be broken in....well I guess I was stupid to believe that excuse. Once again Thanks
I have had my 2002 Tundra for 2 weeks now and have a little over 600 miles and I love the truck however I do have one of your problems but after reading on this board I believe it is just the way the motor is. And that is the fact that I have to hold the key down and keep that starter spinning for the motor to crank over. I had driven a Chevy Z71 with the Vortec 350 for the last 6 years and all I had to do was touch the key and it cranked so I had to train myself to really hold the key down with the Toyota to get it to start. Other than that no problems and I love this 4.7 V-8, has way more power than my Chevy did. Good luck with your idling problem. I would defintely keep going back to the dealer.

I was told by someone in the know that the reason toyota's take a couple cranks to start is they set them up that way so the oil gets splashed around and in the pump before the more starts.. Just an FYI. Makes sense to me
I have already taken those things into Consideration. Toyota has also told me similar things except that it sometimes just wont turn at all and this happens 2 to 3 times a week. I live in Cali and so I know weather isn't the issue cause its happend in different times of the day. But to the Confederate I know what you mean when u say u need to train yourself when starting the Truck. I drive my girlfriends car sometimes and I always accidently hold the key for tooooo long cause I keep thinking I am starting my truck....haha
2 - 3 times per week on not starting is definetly an issue.
I have had the same issue of having the engine turn over several times to get it started, however, I feel that this could partially be due to user error. I some times anticipate the start and will let the key back and it didn't start. after this occurs then it takes a second or two to start. I have not had this issue on some time though.
I would definetly take it to another dealer. If you are near carson toyota I would go there. They seem to be pretty heads up in cali. I am in AZ so I dont know much about cali shops but I would start there. There is a part guy and a sales lady that are on this forum all the time. I think the parts person is Steve G. and the Sales person is Dianne.
Check with them. send a pm and see if they can give you any advice on a good dealer in your area that will take the time to check stuff out and not just give you a line of swine.
