Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Alot of supercharger questions", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 2000 v8 4.7 tundra AC and love it. I have been recently thinking about getting a supercharger due to the face that I can get a really good deal on one but I had some questions about it first.
I just use my truck as a daily driver and never tow anything. I jsut want the s/c for the extra power. What kind of power can I expect from this thing. I am hoping to ONLY buy the s/c hardware for it and a boost gauge. Will i expect to have to buy any other things?
As far as gas what kind of mpg drop will i expect? Also what kind of gas will I need to use. I use regular 89 octane now. Here in miami we have 89, 91, and 93 availible at every pump. Will I be able to keep using regular or will I have to change?
I also am curious about how it sounds? What kind of sound difference does it make? rushing air, whining, ect.
(Better yet does someone have a sound clip of one.)
Also where do you feel the power? All throught the rpm band? only the bottom? only the top like a turbo? what kind of pull characteristics does it have.
Also lastly people who have them how do you like them and what do you think are the pros and cons?
Sorry for all the questions but any help or answers will be helpfull! Thanks!!

Ok, here goes:
The kit - if you can find a complete kit, you won't need anything else . . . but finding a complete kit may be difficult. In general, you will need the s/c, the belt, and the ecu piggyback, but there are lots of "little" parts that come with the TRD kit.
MPG - I did not experience a large drop in MPG, but I put my S/C in before 500 miles, so really only 2 tanks of fuel. I now routinely get 13-14 MPG and I do almost all "city" driving. If I make a long hwy trip, I might see 16+, but that's pretty rare.
Fuel- you will absolutely need PREMIUM all the time, no doubt about it. Knocking is the most reported problem with the s/c (based on my observaces here on TS) and it is also my only problem. Seems that those of us in hot climates have it worse, so you will definitley need premium.
Sound - the TRD s/c is set up with a by-pass so that it only "whines" when under power - it is completely quiet at idle, and even when sitting still and revving it up in neutral. Under full power, the whine is unmistakeable to anyone who knows of things automotive, and its loud! At full throttle, the whine and rush of intake air just about drown out the engine, but not quite - its pretty awesome, IMO. I have been told that the whine can be clearly heard through my cell phone while talking and driving (don't worry, i always use a "hands free" kit). Personally, I love the sound. I think that SCDTRD might have a video in his gallery of driving with his new s/c.
Power - This is the single most impactful modification you can make if you're looking for more power. The power is all over - not limited to high RPMs. In short, if it power you want, the s/c is the way to go.
Pro / Con - the biggest con is that they are hard to find. TRD does not make the kit anymore, so you will have to find someone who has one for sale. The other main problem is the knocking. I must say that this DOES NOT occur in all trucks, but it does in some, and I have been unable to get rid of it in mine. I have not gone to water/methanol injection yet, but its the next step.
Overall, I love the s/c. I have said it here before - this is the single best mod I've ever done, and I've done alot on my various cars over the years.
And, BTW, there's LOTS of threads on this topic. Do a search and you'll find MORE info.
Aloha,
Andy

Theres a few on ebay, just search for "Tundra Supercharger" (for those that are still looking for a s/c). Not sure if you want to spend a large amount on ebay, but from what it looks like on the sellers feedback score, they got a 99.1% rating on positive feedback.
