Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Symptoms of Transmission Failure", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
For those of you with 00 - 02 Tundras who have had transmission trouble, did you notice any symptoms during driving prior to having the transmission failure? Obviously changing the trans fluid and noticing a bunch of metal is a symptom; I'm specifically referring to driveability issues.
My 02 Tundra is approaching 90k. I didn't get the tranny fluid changed until 60k (stupid me for following the manual and not changing the fluid during regular service intervals... ) I'm starting to notice a little hesitation between gear changes. It doesn't feel like the the transmission is slipping, it just feels like it's easing into the next gear rather than shifting firmly. I realize that over time no transmission is going to operate as if it were new, I'm just trying to determine if this is something I should be worried about or not.
i have almost exact same symptoms as mattmarshall 01 v8 ac trd 84000miles.
just wondering if you resolved your problem. i know it was almost 2yrs ago when this thread was started... thanks in advance
a slip or shudder is basically when you feel the car/truck shake as you are pushing the accelerator. its a slight hesistation on the transmissions part and you usually go "what the hell?" once it be comes familar you go " oh f***. "
leevit2beaver, i'm not a expert but maybe your valve body has worn in enough to cause weaker shift points. i don't know it may be too late but i think a shift kit addresses these types of problems, but most people put those in early on or with a rebuilding going on.
as to if this is a problem, i think its like slop in engine - happens over time. not really a good thing thou.

Sometimes when I am driving and I have to go up an incline, I will increase the throttle alittle to maintain my speed and it seems like the truck does not want to shift out of OD and I can feel a vibration in the pedal. The RPMs are around 1300-1400 when this happens. Any ideas what may be going on when this happens if it's not normal?

do you have any load on the transmission besides the weight of the car and yourself? if not, there is friction going on between the over drive plates and the passing gear. thats very vague. i am not a mechanic but something isn't engaging like it should and causes friction or shudder and heat. usually the cause of over drive failure. my guess would be the torque converter and the overdrive have reach a limit and are now limited to the amount of pressure/load they can take. an incline suggests more load and thus slipping. you may need a new tranny soon. then again i have seen a couple ford taurus'/mercury sable trannys slip for over 50k just like you described. if you are interested, look in to changing the fluid and/or adding shudder fix by lube guard. those aren't your best bet but there really isn't much you can do whilest your tranny slips. sometimes i have heard its not a good idea to change the fluid if you have never changed it before and this happens. the fluid is 'contaminated' with metal shavings and all from use and modifies the friction characteristics of the fluid itself. taking these out / replacing the fluid, may make it slip more.
you can always talk to a mechanic specialist that will tell you more, but really all you can do is hope and see how it goes.
dude, the other option is to drive with the o/drive feature disabled. that won't fix any thing but it will allow you to drive for an extended peroid of time before something major happens.
Mine had a delay between 3rd and 4th and then jams into 4th obruptly. Started as an occasion thing and in a months time, bam, I hear metal clinking around but it still drove fine, just didn't lock into o/d anymore. Still had 4th but the tc wouldn't lock. But then again my tranny failure symptons didn't happened until after a accident that also claim the life of my rear diff, which I suspect started it all.

leevit -- Still going on my original tranny at 132,xxx. I added auto-rx during my last tranny flush (90k) and once the new fluid was put in it shifted a LOT better. Getting ready to do another auto-rx application and will have my fluid flushed within the next 1500 miles, I'll let you know how it works out.
FYI - I'm not much on additives for oils and fluids, but auto-rx is deserving of the hype. My engine oil is also due an auto-rx cleaning which I'll be starting this week. It's kind of pricey but well worth it.
