Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Check Engine light on after plug change", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Got around to changing my plugs this morning as I'm close to 30K. Put in copper Denso's just like the ones that came out. Everything went fine and the truck started and ran great but a block away the check engine light came on. Autozone kid said 02 sensor and from reading these forums I know they tend to go bad. Could changing the plugs have anything to do with the light coming?. Also, I have a 01 V8 and I recieved a letter awhile back from Toyota about fixing 02 sensors. Are all the sensors covered or just the front two? Thanks
Pretty sure it's just the first sensors. Auto Zone's scan should have indicated which one or ones have failed with a code #. Your changing plugs was just a coincidence

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

it's your 02 sensor I am in the same boat mine came on last week..It can stay that way till after my trip from NYc ..I was informed the cost to repair was around $150 dollar's which isn't that bad just a pain in the butt driving with the light on. Everything is covered on the O2 sensor's up till 90k on miles whichever comes first

Anyone know if all 02 sensor's are covered by Toyota. I can't find my letter but I do remember them saying something about 7yrs-90K. I'd like to be fully armed with info before I talk to a Dealer. Thanks...

Thanks TundraV8Georgia, reading your post it looks like just the front 2 sensors are covered. The scan at Auto Zone says its on the left side after the Cat-converter. I wonder why all sensors aren't covered? I crawled under the truck and it looks easy to replace. Anyone know where to buy sensors besides the Dealer? Thanks...

Hey Paul,
I "FEEL" you and Erik's pain buddy! I've been wrestling with one on my '95 Tacoma too! The cost of a new O2 sensor... (JUST ONE)... from the dealer, as I was quoted, is $139.95!! Even MORE from AutoZone, Advanced Auto, etc. at $164 and some change!!!
That said, I've been told, it's best to use Toyota "supplied" O2 sensors, which only adds to the pain! Anyway, I found out that they (Toyota O2 sensors) are somehow connected to an O2 sensor manufacturer, named DENSO.
So, here's a LINK to an on-line source for DENSO O2 sensors. I think you may be pleasantly surprised at the price, when compared with OEM!! Also, here's another link to an on-line supplier of O2 sensors http://www.sparkplugs.com/, just in case.
Hope one of these helps...
Dave

Thanks for the Links Dave. The pricing beats anything I can find locally. I have no beefs with any Toyota Dealer,I just feel much better buying parts elsewhere. Paul...
