    Default JBA noise????

For those who installed JBA's, can you hear exhaust noise (more when your windows are up?) I used the JBA gaskets and torqued down the nuts twice since installation and it still makes an exhaust leak sound. It's not the same noise as a cracked manifold- it's more like air rushing through the tubes. I hate to take the them apart to replace the gaskets with factory ones but I will if I have to. I should have straight edged the flanges before installation but I didn't.

Some headers sound tinny. The exhaust is moving faster through the headers primaries, than the stock manifolds. If thats all your hearing, your fine. If you dont know how to properly check for a leak, take it to someone that does.

If you've got a leak, you'll probably know it.
Years ago, my ex felt left out when I was working on the Camaro and wanted to help, so after changing the plugs, I had her torque down the headers (ya, I had to pull the headers to change plugs).
I asked her 5 times if they were tight. Yup.
Okay... turned the key and it sounded like a machine gun

She never asked to help on the car again.

Look where the steering column goes thru the floor. There is a rubber grommet there. It is probably torn or worn out. The exhaust exits very near this under the truck and there is a tendancy for you to hear the exhaust rushing out the pipe with the windows up.
The headers do create a kind of tinny sound, but the JBA gaskets are adequate, factory ones would have been better.
I'd check the steering shaft groomet before i tore it apart to change gaskets that are probably ok.

Check the alignment of the gasket at the collector. If it's the slightest bit off, you'll hear a "ticking" type sound.

Mine seem to do that too, I hear it with the windows down echoing off things, but I can't find any evidence of a leak. If mine is leaking it would definately not be at the head. Maybe at the collector on the passenger side. I think my old truck sounded the same way with the same headers. I remember thinking I should check it for a leak, but with all the miles I had I figured it wasn't worth pursuing.

My JBAs do that too. I like it now. At first, I thought it sounded like an exhaust leak but it is just the sound of the headers and the gases rushing through them. Now, I think it's cool. I get horrible gas mileage with the 295s so I like to at least hear it when it is burning gas. I have JBA headers, an AEM brute force intake, Tuff Country lift with Bilstein adj. coilovers, and 295/75/16s. The headers and intake helped a lot with getting some of the power back. The AEM really makes some noise, which I like. The headers were a great addition too and the noise they make is fine with me.

Ever thought of RE-GEARING to help get your power & fuel mileage back?

Yes, I would love to. I still need new chrome wheels and to get rid of this stock muffler first. The regearing seems to be around $1K or so from what I've read here. That's pretty steep for the time being but I am sure that I'll do it at some point. Thanks for the tip.

Mine is doing the same thing. Mine seems like it is on the right hand bank. I used all JBA gaskets and the left collector may be off a bit. I do have a ticking sound under acceleration. If i unbolt the collector, will i have to use a new gasket or will that one work. I did the install yesterday and just now rechecking everything so they havent been on for a while but something is not right

    No noise from mine.

I used all Toyota gaskets and have maybe
350/400 miles on them and they are quiet.

    Question

I'm ready to have my new JBA Headers installed and I'm going to use toyota gaskets but is it really necessary to use all toyota studs and nuts I priced them and it is over 50.00 I can see the gaskets making a differance but what is wrong with using the hardware that came with the JBA headers?

Generally it is just easier to slip the header flange over studs than to try hold it in place while trying to thread bolts into the head. Some members have reused the old nuts and I haven't heard about any problems doing that. You don't have to remove or replace the factory studs unless you are going to use the JBA bolts or if they are damaged. I'd rather use the factory studs and it's my choice to use new nuts to be sure they stay snug after retightening them after the first warm up.
