This is a discussion thread titled "Borla Exhaust", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I want to run a Borla dual exhaust on my 01 Tundra but I don't know if i should have them come out the side or rear, I want them to look good but I want them to sound great. I guess in a perfect world I would like for the sound to make car alarms go off. Is this even possible with the type of Borla exhaust that I want to get?

Unless the alarm is really sensitive you aren't going to set anything off with a Borla system. If you are looking for a loud, bolt-on, cat-back system check out Bassani. They are the loudest bolt on that I know of. Check out Agent 409 gallery for some videos of his Bassani. Remember to take the baffles out of the tip's of the Bassani to make it even louder. IMO the Bassani sounds great.
I have heard the Borla in person and it is slightly louder than my TRD. My TRD exhaust might make a really sensitive alarm chirp some times, but that is really rare. So I doubt you will set anything off with the Borla.
Your other option would be to go to a muffler shop and have them make you a custom dual exhaust system with glasspack mufflers. That would be loud. Or just don't run any muffler at all.
Your other option would be to add a cutout. That way you can have your quiet muffler when you want and then open up the exhaust system and have it unmuffled when you want. Check out Quick Time Performance's QTEC electronic cutouts. http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/

If I decided to add JBA headers would that make it sound more loud?

If it does anything at all it wouldn't do much. I think headers will really just make it a little louder in the cab. I don't believe it will do much to the exhaust note.
If you want loud and if you want to set car alarms off stay away from Borla.

The only times I've set car alarms off with the borla is in parking garages. Most of the cars with aftermarket alarms will chirp when you go by them due to the echoes and tight quarters. Even in the parking garage you have to step on it a little to set the alarms off. Although the borla doesn't set car alarms off with ease its a good sounding system.
Would a Flowmaster or similar exhaust be louder than Borla? If so which brand or exhaust set up.
depends entirely on what flowmaster. They range from the Super-40 to the DeltaFlow 50 series. A buddy of mine has a custom dual setup with a single-in dual-out DF50, and it sounds pretty good. Personally, I've stuck with the stock exhaust until I find one that I fall in love with. So far, I want the sound of the Banks Monster Exhaust on the Titan. Holy cow it's awsome! I wish I could find a sound clip of the same setup on the Tundra... If it's anywhere close, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
As for flowmaster vs. borla, it depends. If you want a full cat back, then borla is the only one of the two that offers that. If you are doing just a muffler, then I'd prolly go flowmaster 50.
But check out the Banks... You might like it I've been in a few Titans with it, and it has a powerful and deep sound under WOT, but idles and drives at lower RPM almost at stock sound levels. Plus it has that "diesel" look. Truely great!
As to more directly answer your question, go spend some time in vehicles with the setups you're considering. Sound is great, but you want something that doesn't drone!

Watch some of those videos to hear how the Bassani sounds.
If you just want a new muffler, not a complete bolt on cat back system, go to a muffler shop and look into a glasspack or the flowmaster 40 sereis. Both will be loud. I much prefer the sound of the glasspack exhaust though.
Oh, another way to get more sound out of your exhaust is go with a larger pipe than stock. Stock is a little less than 2.5", go with a 3" pipe or dual 3" pipes. Then get some big 4+" tips on the end. That will help it be louder.

If your dead set on duals, id run them straight out the back. That is the cleanest look by far. If your towing, the trailer will be getting exhaust on it....but if your gonna do alot of towing, you should have a single system anyways.
Borla makes some very conservative systems. If you want loud, you need a Spintech Prostreet, or Flowmaster 40 series with a 3" single system.
Again, if you must have your duals, run a single 3" intermediate, with dual 2.25" tail pipes and it will be loud.

So...could I do something like a Flowmaster 40 series with dual 2.25" tail pipes? would that be loud?
I had a flowmaster on my 2002 and it was loud but kinda high pitched. I went with banks on my 2005. At idle my exhuast is very quiet but when I am moving and get on it MAN!!!!! It rocks. If you want to go cheap and be loud try dual magnaflow. I hear they are loud and affordable. Stay away from the flowmaster. Just my 2 cents.

Which will last longer? And which would be louder for what I want to do?
