Help,What is the Oil drain bolt-diameter,threads??
Help,I need to find out what the specs(diameter, threads) are for the oil drain bolt on the Tundra V-8.I ordered a magnetic tiped drain plug for AVLube a couple of weeks back.It arrived, but it wouldn't fit.The diameter appeared correct, but it would only screw in one turn, and them I hit the resistence that usually tells me it has the wrong threads. The fellow at AVLube(Bill) has misunderstood my message, and thinks the plug I sent back has "bad threads" instead of "wrong threads".I think I had better tell him exactly what the specs are on the bolt. Thanks,Charlie PS It is hot(90+) and very humid here today(New Orleans);typical summer weather for us.
I also Just purchased my second and third magnetic drain plug from Bill, and sadly the quality is not the same as the first drain plug I got a year ago.
The finish workmanship was poor, rough threads Sharp egdes where the bolt seats against the washer.
I took a small file and dressed the edge and to give the plug the finished work it needed. I have some background in machine tools and it was fairly ez for me to work with, but the average guy might not be so lucky.
I got out my metric tap and die set and checked the size( which was correct )then ran the die down the threads to clean the rough part.
As I installed the plug It had the same tightness you mentioned but I still could screw it on by hand ( bearly ).
I think after it get used 5 or 6 oil changed the High spots might ware off a bit and should be OK. They just need to address the quality issue on there plugs.
Charlie I suggest getting a die and trying threads they could be just a bit oversize on the bolt when they cut the threads.
If it turns out to be a bad drain plug I'm sure Bill will make it good, He's always seemed to be very concerned about whats best .
Tundraholic, thanks. So the threads are correct?Wow,usually when I get that much resistance,I back off, especially if I know both mating surfaces are new,and haven't been"fooled with".The stock plug screws in easily by hand.
When I was younger,I would have just wrenched it on home.I think I have a 12X1.25 die(cheap Chinese, but it will do for cleaning it up),so I will test it when it returns, and see what is what. Thanks,Charlie
