Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Fuel gauge dropping??", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just the other day I filled up the tank and drove home. The next morning when a backed out of my driveway the gauge showed "empty". As I started driving it slowly went back up, dropped a few times, but eventually read "full". Does this sound like anything someone else has seen?
Oh by the way TS. I have been registered for about 2 years. I go away for 6 mounths come back, and voo-walla, My post numbers and login gone. Re-registered now (same user name). ??????? Thank you.
There was a server crash in Feb, that's why you won't see anyone with a registered date before Feb 2002.
But to answer your question, I think it's normal. Mine's been doing that since new, I bought it a few months ago... You've had yours for 2 years and it never did it before?
Thank you for the reply. Dont computers save alot of headaches? Understandable . This is the first time I"ve seen the fuel gauge thing. It has always stayed where it is, no matter key on or off. Maybe I realy dont look that often, and drive by the fuel "idiot" light. ha.
Thanks. All posts will be read and Appreciated greatly.
My gas gaugewon't go down while I'm on a long trip (long = burning a quarter tank or more) until the truck is off for a while. It's weird, but maybe it's a Toyota thing.

My gauge seems to work fine (bought the truck in late March of 2002). It goes down steadily as I drive, and stays put with the engine off. I have noticed that it takes a long time (5 or 6 miles of driving) for the gauge to make it all the way to full after a fill-up.
Other than that, it seems like every other vehicle I've owned (mostly GM).
Yeah, I've had it do the drop thing too. In the past couple of years, I have seen it drop and fluctuate only a couple of times. Pretty odd looking. I had the dealership look into it once, but they said they couldn't find anything.
There were other people that this was happening to a while back. They were able to get something replaced, I'm not sure what it was though. Perhaps you can find the old thread.
