Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Clunks in 4WD", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I went mud riding today and my truck was giving me some clunks that made me a little uneasy. When I got a little deeper in the mud it started sounding like my hubs were popping or something. I thought at first it was just when I turned the wheel, but it continued to do it when I had it straight. I don't think I was spinning the tires to much. Is this normal? I've had the truck in 4WD a good bit and I haven't really heard it like I did today.
I don't think that stuff would qualify as high traction. I stepped off in it and lost my shoe. I had to go digging for it because it was covered up as soon as it came off. I'm not sure what it was, but I don't think it was because of high traction. Any more guesses?
Happened to me a few years back. Front end spider gears disintegrated in complete silence...only notice I got was WAAAY better gas mileage and zero 4wd.
Might wanna take her to the shop...they can drain the dif and use a borescope to check out the gears without having to disassemble the front dif.
Or, it could be a vacuum leak on teh 4wd actuating piston on the rear, right side of the dif (kinda round looking attachment to the dif axle)

Not what I wanted to hear. My gas mileage sure hasn't gotten any better. If I drained the diff fluid would there be metal particles if the spider gears were failing? How could I check on the actuating piston to see if that was the cause of the problem?

I am the guy Birdog helped out with that diff. Yep, drain the fluid--if it's the diff, you'll see all kinds of metal in coming out. If that's the case--stop driving until you can fix it. If it's the spider gears, consider yourself blessed--destroying the front is the first step in getting true 4WD. You can feel free to PM if you have any questions on it, I am (perhaps) more of an expert on fronts than Birdog is by now (4 times and counting) Now, if yer working on spyplanes....
Upgrades: PA 3" Body Lift, Powertrax No-Slip rear, Detroit ezLocker front, Fabtech/Fox front, Wheeler's AALs, TC Front Diff Drop, 16 x 8 MB Wheels, 285/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs, Pioneer Head Unit, Infiniti Reference speakers [front and rear], 150 W bridged amp to bandpass enclosure, 6 CD changer with IR remote, iPod mini and xm hardwired into stereo, Toyota drop in bedliner, and Tonneau cover
Does anyone have any ideas how much a new set of spider gears would cost for the front? I saw I can get a Detroit True Trac for around $380.
Shipping cost if you can find someone who has replaced them with a front locker. Or you might be able to find a front diff complete for about 100-150. Check TTORA.com
Boody - If indeed your front end is blown out...I am a 45 minute drive away and I have a complete ring/pinion/carrier set in my shed from my front end. Came off a 2001 Tundra front end...it's the stock set-up...i.e., open dif, spider gears and the sort....it'll solve your problem...and for tons cheaper than what you'd get elsewhere.
Heck, I'll even deliver. It'll give me a reason to take a flight out to Lula again.

I had chunks literally fall out onto the ground when mine was drained....bad part was after I drained the original front dif, some chukns came out of suspension and binded my pinion bearing...I ended up having to hit up T.A.P. in Rancho COrdova, CA for a lightly used 2001 front end replacement for $250. I rebuilt THAT front end with a lock-rite locker and did away with those pesky spider gears all together.
