This is a discussion thread titled "intermitten problem shifting from park to drive", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
All,
I have 2005 tundra, great truck but sometimes when I try to shift from park to drive (foot is pressing brake pedal and truck is started) it will not let me move gear shifter from park to drive. It has happened 4 times in last month. Took into shop today and they of course told me that they cannot recreate problem so no trouble found. They did say that they have had problems with camry's. They said that I would have to prove it. It really sux, coz I was waiting in a gas line the other day, stopped. Since traffic wasn't moving shifted into park, then turned off truck. As soon as traffic started moving, cranked truck while pressing firmly on the brake pedal, then tried to put into drive and no go. Then of course people started honking, etc. I have to shut the truck off and back on , basically fiddle with it and then it will final work.
Any help appreciated. I know there is a switch on the brake pedal when pressed turns on the brake lights and also tells the truck the brake pedal is pressed so you can shift out of park. Wondering if there is an adjustment to this switch.
It sounds like you're on the right track with the brake switch needing adjustment. I wonder if the brake light comes on when this happens? Too bad it's an intermittent problem. Good luck; let us know if you ever find out the answer.
I'm having a little problem with my ignition key turning to start. I have to turn the steering wheel a bit just like on my 96 Acura. That one drove me nuts when it first happened.

Not sure if brake light comes on, maybe it will do it while someone is riding with me and I can have them check. I found the adjustment procedure here on tundra solution, I will adjust this weekend. Too bad the dealer didn't try, they said the whole switch would have to be replaced. Time to find another shop :-).

I have the same problem with my 04 DC Tundra. Were did you find the adjustment procedure on tundra solutions so I can try it also. Plus, did the adjustment work? let us know.
Don't know if the 2005 DC is the same, but on my 2002 AC there is an independent switch that the brake lever hits to activate the shift lever release. Look under the dash near the brake pedal pivot. You can see the switch where the brake hits. This switch has nothing to do with the brake lights. I have mine adjusted so that I can shift out of park without the brake.

I found the procedure at INFO: 2005 Tundra Brake System
and the pdf is ovi.pdf. Basically under Knowlegde forums, suspension, steering and brake, then Tundra, then click 2005 tundra brake system, then you will see Brake pedal.zip. Click on that and select ovi.pdf. I was lazy this weekend with watching football and haven't tried yet. I didn't see another switch that steelshot was talking about, will look and see if I can find that as well.
I ahve kinda the same problem but i suspect im just not pushing in the brake far enough, because i dont really have to fiddle with it, just push in the brake farther. hmm, i hope i dont develop this problem.
