HELP!! Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction P0340
Hey. Does anyone know anything about this problem? It was running fine and all of a sudden there was no power and the check engine light came on. I checked it with my code reader, but I have no idea where the Camshaft position sensor is or how to test/repair/replace it. I don't have a repair manual either.
HELP!!! I gotta fix this by Sunday Night!!! I gotta work Monday Morning!!!

Sounds to me like the timing belt either jumped slipped or broke.
That would be my first thought. After taking aprt the front of the engine to determine if the Timing belt was ok or not. The next step would be to check the sensors themselves and then check the camshafts.
Even if the sensor is bad, the ecu would go into LIMP mode and the engine would run ok.
I'd bet on the belt.

IT'S A V6. IT STILL TRIES TO TURN OVER, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE CRAP. WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST MOST OF MY POWER, I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TWO MORE BLOCKS AND GET IT INTO MY DRIVE WAY. OTHER PEOPLE I TALKED TO SAID IT WAS PROBABLY JUST THE SENSOR. DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT IS? ONE GUY SAID YOU HAVE TO TAKE APART SOME OF THE ENGINE BUT THE DEALERSHIP TECH I SPOKE TO SAID IT WAS JUST ONE BOLT BY AND ALL I HAD TO DO WAS TAKE OFF THE ALTERNATOR. THE SENSOR IS LIKE $200 THOUGH AND I DON'T WANT TO REPLACE IT IF I DON'T HAVE TO. DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TEST IT?

AHHHHH a V-6... OK thats a different ball, game.
The first thing I would check is to make sure the front balancer isnt loose and didnt fall off. The 3.4 is know for that.
The next thing would be to check the timing belt and the waterpump. The timing belt drives the waterpump.
Glenn posted the ways to check the sensor , but I have seen very very very few of these go bad on the 3.4L. Its a omh resistance check.
But you said its makeing noises
1: Loose balancer makes alot of noise
2: Bad waterpump will make lots of noise
3: and torn or ripped belt will make lots of noise
4: the t-belt idler pulley is notorious for locking up
5: the t-belt tensioner also may have seized
YOU'LL HAVE TO TAKE APART THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE TO DETERMINE THIS
THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLUG is on the passenger side just behind the power steering pump and clipped to the front cover.

I think the noise was just the engine trying to stay alive. It's a 2000 V6 4X4. How do I check the front balaner? btw, thanks a lot for the help!

I changed the cam position sensor. It sounds like it's turning over normally now. But it isn't starting. I have spark and gas. The timing belt looks brand new. But the two top gears that it turns on, I assume they are the camshafts are pictured in the Hanes manual at 12 o'clock. Mine are not lined up properly. The timing marks that go 0, 5, 10, 15, are supposed to be at 0 according to the book, but mine is at 5. I don't have a compression guage to check the timing so I'm thinking about taking it to a dealership if I can't figure this out. Any ideas?
Re: HELP P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
I just got the Autoxray and it said I had the same thing, it did missfire when I started the engine. I cleared the code and tested it again and this time no bad code. Now I don't know what to do, can this be a on again off again problem?
If so i guess I should just replace the sensor, any thoughts or ideas.
