My trucks been knocking/ticking/slapping for a year now
Not bad, but its starting to get worse now that the weather is getting colder. 2000, 69000 miles. I'm bringing it in tomorrow to see what they say.
I came here to see if there is anything I should do before I bring it in, so my drivetrain warranty will cover it, and HOLY ****, I see all these threads with the same problems..
WTF did I buy? This noise is so embarrasing, it makes me sick.
I'm gonna drop this POS off in Detroit and leave the keys in it, and hope someone takes it off my hands.
So anyway, add me to the list.
How am I going to sell this thing? If someone tried selling me something that knocked when it was cold, I'd laugh, and haul ***.
Should I just print out the 9 page thread and put it in the window of my truck next to my forsale sign?
Now I'm not sure I want to even bother bringing to the dealer tomorrow..
The temps are dropping again in the North East. Man my 2004 Tundra Double cab is rapping worse than my sisters 1 Ton Diesel..
My 1998 GMZC Sierra 5.7 litre went through 3 engines.. Severe rap. Incorrect drilling of oil journals in the crank shafts. 119 days in the shop over 1 year.
I bought a Toyota for quality, not to get the same poor quality of a GM.
My 2000 Tundra Started a new knock. About every 10 days when I start the truck the motor knocks Real hard for about 20 seconds.( I do use the truck every day) It does have 107,000 miles. I guys I work with have been asking whats wrong with my truck.
Piston slap is caused by short skirted pistons, and there's not much you can do about it. It's the price we pay for high revving V8s. On the bright side, piston slap isn't really harmful to the engine...just annoying in cold weather.
Piston slap? Does it sound like a hammer on the side of the engine block and only last for about 15 - 20 seconds? And does it only happen every 10 days? Thanks for your reply
Dave,
Hopefully it's not a leaky head gasket that partially fills one cylinder with antifreeze. I had a turbo 4cyl that did that every 80k miles, letting me know it needed a head gasket. But it had a aluminum head on a cast iron block. A sealer pill added to the radiator would prolong the replacement procedure. Pulling the spark plugs when it was rapping showed AF on one of the plugs.
Doug

Sounds like you have a aftermarket oil filter without the check valve in it.
The check valve keeps oil in the filter to keep it from rattling when you first start it.
If you have a factory filter it might be bad.

I had the same problem with the ticking/knocking noise at startup when the engine was cold. The toyota dealer said it was nothing to worry about so I just drove it. Well the State decided that the county we live in needed vehicle emmision inspections. SO when I went to get the emmisions test, it failed because of a pinhole in the right manifold. Dealer said they would be glad to fix it for $900.00 which I though was a total ripoff. Fortunatly, I had purchased the vehicle with a 100,000 mile extended warranty and with a little research on the main toyota website, the exhaust manifolds are covered. Dealer denied that this was covered, but I just presented the "what is covered" page from the Toyota website and within the hour, I had a new right side exhaust manifold and the knocking/ticking is gone.
Work was performed at 69,000 and I have 84,000 on the 2001 Tundra now.
