Default Oil filter relocation - thread size?

After hassling with dropping the skid pan during my first oil change, I'm now looking for an oil filter relocation kit.

I was pretty sure the filter thread is 3/4"-16 based on info from Trasko's X-ref chart listing the Purolator L10241 filter I used AND this comment on the Perma-Cool site: "Ford relocation kits have a 3/4-16 center thread and fit most Ford and Mopar engines and many Nissan and Toyota applications..."

But then I stumbled across the PickupTruck.com site (which was the only one that listed kits specific to a particular vehicle) and they say the Tundra 4.7L has 18 x 1.5mm threads.

I'm about 90% certain it's 3/4-16, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows for sure?

TIA, Dave

The Tundra oil filter threaded fitting is a 3/4"-16 without a doubt. I am considering relocating my filter also. I took a new Toyota oil filter, YZZB5, down to the local bolt and fastener store and a 3/4"-16 bolt fits perfectly.

PermaCool makes a universal kit for relocating the filter and here it is: http://www.permacool.com/Catalog/Cat_page27.html Their catalog also contains specific parts to build your own depending on where you want the inlet ports pointed. Here is the big catalog: http://www.permacool.com/Catalog/Contents.html

Summit Racing has the PermaCool universal remote filter kit for $34.95 here: http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...3D12%26s%3D172

Mounting the remote filter in the vertical position underneath the battery looks like a good spot. Having the filter in the vertical orientation allows you to fill the new filter with oil prior to installing it to minimize the amount of time the engine is running with no oil supply after an oil change. Using the custom remote filter brackets from PermaCool with inlet ports to the side looks like the best option for a clean installation.

Default Wow! Excellent reply...

Alan,

Thanks much for the great info. You have certainly done your homework (and I feel a bit guilty about copying your answers!) on this subject. I'll check out the links you provided & post my results as this project progresses.

Thanks again,
Dave

Default One more question on this...

since you've already done some research. Any thoughts on mounting the remote filter at a certain level with respect to the engine? IOW, if it's too high will it cause problems? (A location up high would certainly be easier to reach)

I suspect the pump pressure is sufficient to push the oil through several feet of hose; but I wonder if the bypass valve setting might be altered if the filter is higher than stock?

Default oil change

I drilled a 1 1/4 " hole in the skid plate directly below the filter, and use a $1.25 funnel to catch the filter and oil...... No mess, no fuss and a lot less work ( not to mention cost ) than relocating the filter.

Has anyone done this on a 2006 DC. Yes it is a real pain.

Pics/ parts would be helpful.

Thanks
