Default tranny fluid?

I've just rolled past about 90,000 and i have never changed the transmission fluid. I'm thinkin that its better late than never, right? Should i run just the toyota stuff or some type of synthetic? what are some people's experiences and suggestions? thanks

Wow, I changed mine out to amsoil syntetic at 50000 km. I like the synthetic especially in the cold.

I'd clean the transmission with Auto-rx for their safe, effective 1000 mile cleaning process, then install your choice of Dexron-III synthetic ATF. Dexron-III ATF is the correct type for a 2002 Tundra. I like Schaeffer, Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, and RedLine ATFs.

Ken is any Dexron III ok for an '01 2WD tranny? Maybe a Pennzoil or something.

I have been running Mobil 1 for the last 2 complete fluid change outs but im at 86k now and probably will upgrade to a newer truck before long and don't want to spend the extra money for the Mobil 1 right now. I seem to remember some trucks you had to add some other fluid to it or maybe that was for transfer cases or rearends, I can't remember which.

Do you check the tranny fluid level while the truck is running and in park, or when its turned off?

I usually do it when I run errands around town and once you're all done. That's a good time to check it.

I don't see the answer in Toyota owners manual but for Ford it's idle.

Its checked with the engine running. Also, run the tranny thru all the gears a couple of times before checking.

Check the level warm and running in park.

For 2000-2002 Tundras, your choice of Dexron-III ATF. If you're using a synthetic, it is likely good for 50,000 miles or more. To save money, you can get a $20 analysis at Blackstone Labs. You might find that synthetic fluid has many thousands more miles of life remaining.

Ken
When I drained the Mobil 1 out, after almost 50,000 miles it still looked almost new. I couldn't believe it. I went ahead and did the complete flush but just put the Pennzoil Dex III in it for now. Wish I would have kept a tube of the old fluid to have tested, just out of curiosity to see if it was still going strong. Thanks for the info.
