Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Borla Air Filter Service", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 2003 Tundra TRD Sport that came with the Borla air filter system. On the air filter cover it says to service every 50,000 miles. I ran a search and did not find anything about this topic. I was also at the dealer yesterday for the lower ball joints and asked about it. He mentioned a cleaning kit, but of course did not have one in stock, or the part number (yes, the service dept is open on Sundays!) Has anyone done this service? I cant imagine it being very difficult to clean an air filter. Does anyone know anything about the cleaning kit? Like what it is and where to get it? Thanks all!

If it is just a drop-in filter element, you might be best served to toss it and install an OEM filter. No one has found any benefit from an aftermarket element yet.

Yep...Borla air filter. I bought this truck new and this is how it came from the factory. Thanks for the link to Borla!

Probably a dealership add-on. I'd toss it and use a Denso OEM filter.

You can get a cleaning kit at AutoZone. They have the K& N filter and cleaning kit. I think that it's the same thing. I did it once and it worked fine. I've since gone to the AEM brute force thing which uses a similar material filter on a cone. Don't know if it did any good performance wise, but I love the sound of it! Really makes it sound good when you punch it.

This air filter comes with the exhaust system itself, I have the same one and looking for a cleaning kit. Did using the K&N work out ok?
To the comment that said toss it for an OEM, what a waste of money.
My Tundra had one of these in it, I didn't toss it, but I did replace it with a factory drop-in. In my experience the K&Ns & Borla filters aren't worth the work.
When I bought my M3 it had a K&N in it. Cleaning that was a pain in the arse. A lot of the racers were flow testing these things and they found out that the factory BMW air filters had a higher flow rate than ANY of the aftermarket stuff. So, now I'm just dropping in the $10 BMW filter once a year or so.
Anyway, with all the turns in the air induction I doubt you're going to really see any improvement with just a filter.
