Default Engine Noise

Not sure how to explain the noise coming from my 2001 Tundra V8 with 31k miles, but here goes. The noise sounds like a belt noise. It is like rink, rink, rink......
The noise comes and goes. Sometimes it does it when cold sometimes it does it when hot. Varying engine speed does not make the noise go away it just gets faster.
This past weekend I took the belt off thinkging I would find a bad bearing or something in the belt system. This is the general area that the noise is coming from. With the belt off and engine running the noise is still there. That eleminates all the accessaries.
I have checked the forum but did not find anyone with this type of noise. It's in the engine for sure. Maybe some type of Camshaft belt tensioner? Like I said the noise comes and goes. Sometimes it will not make the noise for many miles and the start up again. Usually you can hear in intown driving. Can't hear it at speed. But when idleing it sounds bad.
Thanks for any help,
Daybreaker

Without the serpentine belt on and the noise is still there I'd suspect a cam
belt tensioner or the water pump. Maybe one of the techs can add more info.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???

Well the water don't turn with the belt off. Cam tensioner is possible. This thing comes and goes. Like when you are trying to find it, it quits.
Any help?

If I'm not mistaken the water pump is driven by the cam belt and just the fan is driven from the serpentine belt. Could be wrong though.

Larry,
You might be correct on the water pump. Just bought this truck 2 months ago. Been driving Chevrolets for 33 years this is my first Toyota product. Had a Honda Accord a few years ago.
It is weird how this noise comes and goes.
Daybreaker and puzzled.

It was the water pump making the noise. Took it in to the Toyota Dealership yesterday and they made out like they had never heard a noise like it was making. I told them that I had taken the serpentine belt off and it still made the noise. The first thing they thought of was the water pump or a cam belt tensioner. It turn out that it was the waterpump.
LGL002 you were correct!
Thanks all,

Daybreaker

Glad it worked out . Squeaks can be annoying buggers especially if they're tough to locate.
