Default Smelly Echo

Howdy - new to the forum. I've got a 2001 Echo. I've had the check engine light on for a few months, shop said it was a general evap code - they turned it off and it came back on. For the last few weeks, the car smells up the garage with a burned gas smell after driving. It goes away over night. And the check engine light is no longer on. Don't notice any smell while driving, just when setting after driving. Gas level in the tank makes no difference - full, empty, whatever. Any thoughts? Any thoughts on a good repair manual for the Echo? Thanks...
