Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Check Engine light on; then a problem!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Vehicle is a 2000 Tundra 4.7 Access Cab;
Yesterday, while pulling into a driveway, the "check engine" light suddenly came on and there was a loss of power. They engine didn't die; the tach went to about 1,000 RPM like it was at idle. When I pressed on the gas pedal, the engine would not accellerate. In fact, pressing on the gas seemed to have no effect.
So I stopped the truck, shut it off, started it back up, and it ran normally. The check engine light was still on for about an hour, then it went off. Truck ran fine, but then it did the same thing several hours later. Any ideas?

LawyerRon, couple of thoughts. Check your gas cap.
Also, go by autozone and have them hook it up to the code reader.
Then post your code and shmeone should be able to help you out.
good Luck,
RE

Thanks Randy,
I checked the cap this morning and it seems to be OK. Funny thing is, the truck fired right up this morning and ran normally with full power. The check engine light is now off too. I think I'll go by Autozone this morning when they open.
LawyerRon,
Never replaced it on a Tundra. Don't think it's that difficult though. I'm inclined to buy the part, look at it, figure out basically how it works, and install it. If it doesn't work or you can't get it on....... take it back........ no harm done(usually). Frequently, AutoZone has directions for R/R of alot of the stuff they sell. Don't know if the TPS from AutoZone is of high quality or not.
If Mustang67408 is around, maybe he'll chime in here with some step-by-step.
I've PM him, so hopefully he'll pop in.
good luck,
RE

Here ya go with a how to replace straight from toyota.
After you replace it make sure to disconnect the battery to clear the code and reset the ECU.
You may need a SCAN TOOl to set the % of throttle opening.

As long as the reader reads, "REALTIME DATA" and Throttle %.
I have never seen the one at Autozone, so i really dont know.
Some code readers are just code readers and dont do DATA LISTS.
