Red face Truck finally back on the road!

Well, after many exhausting days sitting in the back yard, tearing the old girl apart, I finally got the front dif carrier out and emptied. As I suspected, the ring and pinion were fine, but he spider gears and casing were all $!@$^#&@$@. Out of the 4 gears, one was completely cleaned One had 1 tooth remaing and the other two wore the same grins as those characters from Deliverance.

All the splines and bearings appeared fine, as were all the seals and sort. So, I gutted the front dif, and replaced it back in the truck. I'm now strictly a 2WD but at least I have some wheels to get back and forth to class in.

I have good mind to shoot some photos and a nasty gram to Toyota Motor Corp. to show the failure of these parts and demand something be done about it. I couldn't believe my eyes!

Anyone have any good contacts on how to go about this?

Exclamation Amazing, exploding 7.5" diff

BirdDog0,

I wish I knew what to tell you. I am in the same boat but the dealer has my truck. I took it in on Monday, 19Aug, and told the svc writer that when I try to engage the front end, it seems to lock up. Until I apply ANY throttle that is! Then there is a loud sort of popping sound and no 4wd. The tech was dumping the fluid when he got the remains of my spider gears along with the gear oil--sound familiar to you yet(?). I am likewise quite stunned. I knew that I had a significant problem, butt nothing prepared me for this result!

The svc mgr says he cannot authorize a warranty repair based on the "condition" of the vehicle--ie, SAW RR coil-overs & BFG MT 255/85's on oem alloys. This is utter BS of course! There was no single, loud, wacked out event related to this carnage. I had 4wd and the next time I tried to engage it, I no longer had 4wd.

I am sort of lucky I guess, because the regional Toyota factory troubleshooter guy will be at the dealer tomorrow, Wed, I mean TODAY actually. I am going to try to get over there while he is in "da hows" and see what happens. I will definitely POST the outcome of our little pow wow.

In the mean time, I plan to do what you have done. Gut the front diff and have a 2wd for a while. If Toyota doesn't step up, I will definitely have some words(and other stuff) to throw at them. If this was Ford or GM I would not be optimistic at all, but Toyota does have a pretty good rep for tcb, baby.

I will get back to you....

----Scott

Unfortunately, that sounds a little too familiar. Sorry to hear it

I'm going with the Powertrax non-slip for the front. Performance Products has been the ONLY place that seems to have it. Still no luck finding manual hubs though.

Good luck!
