Default Transmission Fluid Change

The Toyota Service Passport doesn't mention replacing the transmission fluid unitl 60,000 miles under the sever duty application(towing). I've got 45,000 miles (in two years) with the original fluid and I do occaisional towing.

I've got an '04 Tundra DC. Does it have a screen or a filter? Will droping the pan and changing the fluid be good enough?

I really don't trust the dealerships in my area. Their prices are very high and they recommend doing everything much sooner than Toyota. Who should you trust?

It uses a screen and a Toyota tech will tell you that IF they actually drop the pan, they are just going to clean out the screen. I dropped my pan at 30K and the screen was perfect and there was very little material in the bottom of the pan.

My advice would be to just drain and refill at 15k intervals. Maybe drop the pan at 100k just to look things over. Dropping the pan is a PITA as the gasket is not readily available and replacement screens are $$$. Plus, you have to clean the factory sealant off the pan.

You could get the Magnafine inline filter from IPT for $15.

Thanks for the advice. I assume that I could install the by the aux. trans. cooler (top side - supply, bottom side - return?) I guess if I filtered the oil just before the cooler it would help keep the cooler clean as well?

What is IPT? Not familiar with this term. Also, would I change this filter each time I change the fluid?

IPT is a vendor many from here have use. IPT Performance Transmissions Torque Converters and Transmission Parts for Ford, GM, Chrysler, and Import vehicles

Actually you should be the filter at the output line so that only clean fluid goes back into the transmission.
