Trans fluid odor inside after fluid change 98TRD

HI guys,
I could use some help on this one. I just finished doing a fluid change on my 98TRD V-6 Tacoma. It has a manual transmission. I have owned the truck since day one and have never experienced this new problem. For some reason I am getting a gear oil smell in the truck when in a lower gear and I open a window. I pulled the center console and inspected both boots for cracks. Nothing wrong there. I rechecked that the 22mm nuts on the trans are tight and I filled it to the correct level as per the factory manual. The smell is much more apparent in a low gear vs. 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Only with a window or the sunroof open. The smell is definately coming from the shifter area. What am I missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
